Some of y’all are very disingenuous talking about Goatdal, then Thiem takes him down and the narrative becomes Thiem barely manages to take out Nadal. He took him out in straights.

Amen & hallelujah! The hypocrisy's mind-numbing at times! If I'd eaten, I would've upchucked! Luckily my stomach's settled on a "fat coffee!"

Yeah, we have to give Thiem credit, it was a tight win and he won the big points, which is what it's all about. Roll on Wednesday. I think it's probably better for Rafa if Rublev wins tonight, in the dreaded scenario that Thiem wins 3 and the others get one win each. But that's a legal minefield.

Wednesday versus Tsitsipas is a quarterfinal match, however we look at it. I'm sure Rafa will think of it that way and take what he can as a positive from today...

Theim did play the big points better, reminds me of their AO match earlier this year.

The young Greek wins the 1st set with ease 61 against Rublev (who has the best hair in the mens game)

Apparently Rublev did not get the message he needs to defeat the Young Greek maybe he is just giving him a false sense of security:)

Sorry to say, but Rublev, like Schwartzman are overwhelmed and just sacrificial lambs to the elite! Happens every time you get one of the newbies playing the YEC their 1st and only time! I'm sure Rublev will get back, but it's still too early for him to make a mark! Stefanos is murdering him now even though Rublev the match king this season with more wins than Nole from what I hear!

Typical; Stefanos making his job harder than need be! Thiem does the same! Surprised he didn't allow Rafa a set to make him work for it!
Well the Young Greek had 4BPS and could not break serve?.....Rublev is holding is holding is own at present. That was a tough hold

If Rublev wins, and then beats Thiem in straights, and Rafa beats Tsitsipas in straights - 3 BIG If's, I know - but how do they then measure who goes through, with 3 players on 2 wins each? I know this comes up every year, but anyone know the shorthand version?

As we all predicted, Rublev is gone, but typically, not without a good fight.

Rafa faces Tsitsipas in what's basically a QF. One word: vamosss!! :popcorn

Theim is assured for a s/final spot now.
The Young Greek will play Rafa whoever wins the match qualifies as well for a second s/final spot? someone can correct me if I am wrong

You can get off your high horse there just a bit. Nadal was up 2 mini-breaks in the 1st set TB, and a break in the 2nd set. Not really a typical Nadal-style loss. And it was 2 tight sets.

It was a definitely one of those “coulda, woulda, shoulda” matches which doesn’t take away from Theim’s well earned victory. I’ve yet to see Federer fans not bitch or wet their shorts if Federer lost a set after having set points, one on his serve...

Losing 2 TB’s when you had a lead in both sets is definitely a nail biter.

Chrissie, Martina and Mac have been saying it for years. When you get older (in your 30s) it gets harder and harder to close sets and especially matches out. Just ask Serena, Fed, Venus and now Nads.
