Starting to see great signs of players stepping up to challenge Rafa and Djokovic. I still think at a slam it will be a tough ask at the moment as best of 5 will always suit both Rafa and Djokovic at the moment. Good to see Thiem, Zverev, Rublev, and Medvedev start making moves and be dark horses and make things interesting in draws.

So is this the first RR tourney two players beat both Rafa and Novak?

Nah. Soderling beat them both in 2009. But this is the first time a player has won it beating the top 3 players on route so Medvedev set a record along with his win. Might hold that one for quite some time too.

Read that wrong btw sorry. That was two players beating them once of course. Davydenko beat Nadal also that year but no one else beat Djokovic.

its a fact Nadal was a far better than Medvedev at 23 majors 6-0.

No, it's not a fact. We're talking about indoor tennis and he's never won either Paris or the WTF. You're talking about something completely different and claiming Nadal at 23 would've have beaten Medvedev at the WTF where Nadal has never won. The stats don't back that up at all.

You’re wrong, Nadal aged 23 definitely would have beaten Medvedev at the WTF: Danii was only aged 12 then... :lol6:

Fun Stat,
The first and last years ATP Finals in London see Russian singles champions,

2009 Davydenko
2020 Medvedev.

Davydenko was one of the cleanest ball strikers around. Shame he was never the same after his wrist injury in 2010 which happened just a few months after he won the WTF in 2009 and I always think of Davydenko and laugh at the weak era nonsense thrown about regarding Federer as Davydenko would've given tons of guys on tour now absolute hell.

I always enjoyed watching Davy, agree a wonderful ball striker, probably never reached his full potential after his wrist injury.I dont get involved with the 'weak era argument' it is quite laughable.

When did I ever compare him to Soderling :D I like him, he's good to watch but he's defintiely not playing like Soderling lol. No disagreement there :D But he's not a pusher either. Thankfully! There was that was one godawful pushing rally yesterday where thankfully Nadal said f**k this and blasted a winner to put us all out of our misery watching that. If he was a pusher I wouldn't like him one bit just like I can't stand Simon or Mannarino or Monfils 99% of the time 'cos that's how they always play. Monfils blasts some great winners every so often and should always play like that but he chooses to be another awful pusher which is the most bizarre waste of talent I've seen in tennis. A guy with his shot making skills and athleticism should be playing aggressive tennis most of the time and he'd have had a far better career. Awful tripe to watch.
My mistake if I read that in, but you were looking for him to perform well at RG since last year this time, and he's nothing on clay, so I figured you were looking for another Nadal threat. But you're right...he's nothing like Soderling except in superficial assessment. But you do have to accept him for what he is, which isn't always aggressive. He's a chess player and waits for his moments. Plus he's tricky and has lots of change-ups. And he also absorbs pace in a way that is unusual in a big guy. You may not like that he pushes on occasion, and more than a few, but he does. I was glad to see him pull it off today, even though I like Thiem well enough, too. Great match!

Pretty sure Nadal beats a 12 year old Medvedev, Also Nadal 34 years old So Medvedev beating up on a old man in tennis terms is nothing special.

I don’t know I think beating the current number 1, 2, and 3 players in the world as well as the current Australian Open, French Open, and US Open champions is pretty special regardless of their ages.

winning Atp finals yes is Special and also beating Thiem Zverev, but Nadal is 34 on his worst surface and Djokovic is 33 as well.

Novak cares the ATP finals but he is 33 and he seems like he doesn’t have so much energy and strength like before

If Nadal service would have worked better I don’t think he would have lost vs Medevedev, his service was good in the previous matches but horrible in the last one

But surely it is, after all it's your mighty goal Nadal he beat. Funny as hell reading this when you talk garbage about players beating much older Federer, especially Djokovic. Seems Nadal must have aged a ton in your eyes since he won RG just a few weeks ago lol.

Can't disagree with anything there and good synopsis of his play style. Nah, not looking for just another Nadal threat as he's clearly able to beat them all and just like the way he plays. Very unorthodox. Surprises his opponents often.
