I will add that Shapo has a much better attitude - he seems to be having a lot of fun out there, enjoys competing and just playing. Rublev has a bit of that angry/entitled quality - if his shot doesn't work out how he thinks it should, he gets angry. He seems very temperamental.

Amazon Prime.

I might get flack for this, but Shapo reminds me a bit of....Rafael Nadal. Don't know what it is. He goes after and gets quite a bit of everything. Hits some improbable cross court shots. His serve is as good as Rafa at his best, and should eventually be quite a bit better.

I am not saying he's going to be as good as Rafa, just that I see tones of the great Spaniard in his game.

This is some great tennis - these two are legit. Shapo has the higher upside, I think. Just a more well-rounded game. But both are really fun to watch, very ballsy players. Rublev hits the ball nicely.

Watched just the last few points of TB of final set. Rublev won and make it to SF. Shapo is ousted. Now in this group Chung is #1 and Rublev is #2.

In the other group, only thing we know for sure is that Donaldson is out. Any two of the other three players can make it to SF (if each win 2 matches - the semifinalists would be decided by sets won and games won) But, the chances of Coric getting ousted is very slim.

Quinzi finally got the hang of the format and is taking Chung the distance. 5th little short sets TB.
.

He went the distance in his first match too, also losing in a tie-breaker on the fifth. He ended up 0-3, but wasn't straight setted in neither of his matches and all final sets went to tie-breakers, so a decent showing after all.

What do you mean "it would have been". There is still a chance. This is RR format. Shap lost only one match
so far. He can still reach the finals, I suppose, at least in theory.

I just thought Rublev ranked higher and would win to eliminate Shap who already had a loss under his belt! It'll be nice to see later; esp. this new format on TCC! What are the times/length of the matches going 4 or 5? Normally we're talking 3-4+ hours; esp. with Nadal or Djokovic! Eliminating some of the bouncing of the ball before the serve alone should cut an hour off of it! :p  :ptennis:

It is 3-2-1-0 in both groups.

The SFs are Chung vs. Medvedev and Coric vs. Rublev.

I think Coric will win this out. Coric showed maturity by beating Sasha at USO.

3 matches today went "5 sets." Two took just over 2 hours, and one about 10 minutes under 2 hours. It's speedier, but I'm not in favor of changing the grown-up tournaments to that format, for the sake of brevity.

Borna bites the dust in straight sets. Rublev proved why he is seeded #1.

Now, I hope he lifts the trophy.

Borna is a dissapointment. He was by far the most experienced player of this bunch.

Third year in a row that Borna is finishing in the top #40-50 range. I think the ship has sailed on him developing into an elite player - maybe top 20, but probably not top 10 except for brief spells. I see his upside being something like Tommy Robredo, but he could also be Andreas Seppi.

So, it is Chung vs. Rublev.

Medvedev took it to five sets, but Chung bagelled him in 5th.

I am rooting for Rublev.

Chung has already beaten Rublev in RR; Can he do it again?

Too early for the jury on Coric, he is only 20 years old, so the third year in a row stuff is kind of bordering on irrelevant considering his age and the fact he's also had quite a few injuries. I kind of like his attitude and think he'll be a Top 16 player.

So what happened to Coric today? Medvedev got a walkover to take 3rd place making Coric 4th in the Inaugural Next Gen event!

Sure, top 16 = Tommy Robredo/Gilles Simon/Nicolas Almagro...that type of player, what i call "third tier." I'm not writing him off, I just don't see him as a future elite. I think the question is whether he ends up in the #6-10 range ("second tier") or, as I think, the #11-20 range ("third tier"). As you say, the jury is out.

He's 21 in three days, by the way. Not that it matters: young is young.

Just checked Wiki to see if the matches had started, but so far the only thing I've learned is Medvedev will have to earn his 3rd place check with an exhibition against Shapovalov! Still don't know what happened to Coric; even the net hasn't updated info on the tourney since SF last yesterday!  :ptennis:

Congratulations to Hyeon Chung for winning the first final of NextGen.
He did it without losing a single match. He was the most experienced of them aside Coric anyway.

I didn't see a spoiler option, kept it to myself! Score for final was listed on Wiki, but the exhibition still a mystery & if it came off!

I watched about half of the final. My impressions of Rublev are unchanged: The kid has a ton of talent, but is very temperamental. He can hit the ball well, but struggles with his serve. When things aren't going smoothly, he loses his temper and suffers for it. If he can get a handle on his emotions, he's going to be a top 10 player. I see a Berdych-type.

As for Chung, he showed some incredible defense - Rublev was pounding him, and he kept returning. Very attritional, though, so his upside is limited. Definitely top 20, though. I suppose Ferrer is his absolute upside.
