i was wondering the other day, whether could Rafa become the first ATP #1 without a Wimbledon match win (in that relevant 52 week cycle) since Thomas Muster (who, by the time he got to #1 had already come to his tradition of not even showing up at SW19)

turns out he can't - because Rios was the next , quite soon after Muster, with a round 1 loss. it's really not that rare, especially for clay courters; just a reminder of how the tennis calendar works/worked. Kafelnikov also enjoyed his time at the top despite a first round loss at wimby. somewhat ironically, he dropped from the position a week before the next Championships, in which he would actually do considerably better (3rd round).

Guga actually held it for the summer and fall of 2001 (30 consecutive weeks starting in April) despite a no-show at Wimby.

honorable mention to Moya, who'd made it to the second round in the year leading up to his brief #1 stint.

Depends on the quality of his opponent more like. He has Rosol, Gulbis, Brands on the horizon for unseeded threats and then Janowicz, Haas and probably many others in the seeded players to worry out in the early rounds.

Nadal is far better than all those players you named.

I'm putting your name on the list, since you agreed with me and what's seldom is wonderful and well worth keeping a record of.

Who thinks Nadal will someday be #1 again?

You should pay more attention to what Nole does. Every year he skipped the official ATP warm-ups, he played an exhibition, here other high ranled (top 20
) are going thus he has good practice on grass

Well, not every year. I recall a great match he played in 2008 at Queens.

You don't read my messsages attentively, do you?
I said every time he skipped the official warm-ups"
In 2008he obviously didn't, by entering Queens.
And no, I won't co-sign to this wish list of yours, because I know that Djokovic will redeem himself between Wimby-USO to keep his pole post safe.

Sorry Herios,

Novak has not performed well this summer and will lose his #1 spot soon. How soon depends on how he shows up at the Open.

Yes, random, but full of fun facts. Thanks, JS!

Remember this?

Still taking names, folks! Now don't be shy, it could happen! :p

Wish I had registered here earlier, because I would have put my name on this thread in September last year. I've been talking Nadal up all over the world during the last 12 months (for saying he'd win Player Of The Year in 2013, and for saying he'd win 18+ slam titles), and I've been bashed by millions for doing so.

Read the original thread from tennis.com - people thought we were mad to predict this. They thought Nadal was caged by Djoker. Except on clay. Or maybe even there too. This is why it got resurrected a few times, because the idea got "bashed..."

ESPN FIRST TAKE
31 January 2012

Skip Bayless: They can still be playing and Djokovic would win the match, because he now owns Nadal psychologically just the way Nadal owns Federer psychologically. It only happens in the sport of tennis....Once you break somebody's will its done, your done, and you can play as long as you want and you won't beat the guy.

Stephen A. Smith: It's over....It's over....No disagreement there.

anyway, isn't it time for a new thread ? since the IF is hardly a question anymore (*knockonwood*, he just has to be healthy enough for about 6 or 9 sets of tennis, depending where he plays)... the WHEN is a only slightly more interesting - depends mostly on his gusto for tennis in the next weeks...

so, might the real question be: HOW LONG will Nadal be #1 this time? ;)

NADAL2005RG

Nadal can gain big points at Australia, Miami and Wimbledon next year (and some points at Monte Carlo). So at least Nadal won't have to defend everything next year. He will gain in other events perhaps. And if Djokovic is the nearest rival in the rankings, maybe Murray will continue to improve and restrict Djokovic's success, and surely Federer will have a better 2014 than this year. So I'm pretty confident Nadal will be ranked #1 all of next year. And the fact that he isn't wearing bandages on his knees (and that his doctor told him his knee tendon is 100% healthy for the first time in many years) is a pretty good indication that his knees will not be a problem next year.

There was never any "IF" to Kieran's notion about this thread. :clap I'm giving it another bump, since he was taking names.

As to "how long?" Well, that's the subject for another thread, and I invite you to start it. :)

Just to update......I watched ESPN FIRST TAKE the morning after the 2013 US Open Men's Final, and no surprise.....they did not even mention the US Open at all. But at least I tweeted them (I tweeted the show, the host, and both debaters)-

Nadal has now won 6 of last 7 matches vs Djok. But Skip/SAS said Nadal was "done" in 2012-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2Lylybycxc ...#owned

Probably not worth bothering, but I thought I better do something with it....seeing as I kept that youtube all these months in anticipation of Nadal proving them wrong.

Now that it is official, my congratulations and respect to Nadal and his fans here on this board for believing and keeping faith with the guy. Never been a fan and I won't pretend that I like him but hey credit where credit is due. Statistically he's having a season for the ages and becomes the third player in the Open Era to regain the #1 spot for the third time after Lendl and Federer. Fully deserved.

Kieran gets the credit for this thread, and for getting people to sign up to it. It was a greater rallying of the troops than someone like Clay Death ever managed. :emperor:

Props to all the Rafa fans who hung tough in the lean times. Didi, thanks for the stat about Rafa being the 3rd player to regain the #1 for the third time. I didn't know that.

And congratulations to Rafa for getting the #1 back. !Campeón! :celeb:

Well deserved!

Impressing come back, even if I'm not his fan,, I have to admit that he deserves to be N°1
