No, it's not really that different. It's whining because we each feel our favorite underprivileged by circumstances, if you like. I'm only pointing out that that has rarely happened to Rafa, (roof closed for weather/darkness,) on the one side, and yet you blame a lot of Roger's losses on the homogenization of surfaces. Not that they've really changed during his tennis career. Whereas the addition of roofs is new. And I notice that you had nothing to say when JLLB pointed out that the rule about opening the roof in good weather was changed. So it turns out we were justified in complaining that that was a stupid rule. The roof thing is a small feature, rather new, and we even got proven right, on one issue. The slowing of surfaces is a much larger issue, but it doesn't mean that you don't over-whinge, even beyond that.

Yes that roof rule was dumb. You know what else is even worse? The British curfew and as mentioned before there would not have been a 2nd day if the Brits weren't afraid of a zombie apocalypse or whatever other dumb reason they have. So this is an instance where one awful rule led to the match being affected by another awful rule.

It's not about being bother but rather about the game of tennis being a fair weather sport..if it was Roger facing Anderson under a close roof when it's sunny and not a threat of heavy rain clouds..you or your cosignee would whine ..it's strange you say Rafa fans are desperate for a win at Wimbledon but nothing when Darth carries on about the texture of a blade of grass.
The rules allowed the players to decide whether to continue with the roof closed or not. It appears from an earlier post that those rules have now been changed, so I guess the roof will now be open if the weather is fine.

As to the type of grass, we all know that the current grass changes dramatically in the second week, which I think is not fair, considering that we end up having 3 slams playing slow. It would be like quickening RG in the second week and I am curious how Rafa fans would feel about that.

Hm, now that they dumped it, you agree it's dumb. Before that, it was just me being partisan, IIRC. Anyway, it'd be interesting to know what @Federberg thinks of the curfew, since he lives right there. Remember that Wimbledon is located in a residential area, the only one of the majors. I guess the problem is the disruption to the neighborhood late at night when a match lets out. Maybe 11pm, at least, is a little early? Or maybe they could put up with it on occasion for two weeks of the year.

I'm not sure how you can say that the grass changing the 2nd week isn't "fair." First of all, a lot depends on the weather, but how do you propose to keep the grass from wearing down over the course of 14 days?

Yes it was dumb but your complaints are still partisan. He stinks indoors and you're upset it stayed indoors even though the only reason there is a 2nd day in that circumstance is due to some ludicrous curfew. If they had played out the match that night and the result was the same I'm guessing the Ralph fans would be complaining that they put Isner-Anderson as the first match.

That is completely unfair to me. That match was over and I just said the rule was dumb. You never copped to that until now. Don't tell me what I, for one, may have said had circumstances been different.

I don't see it as unfair. I'm glad it helped lead to Nadal's defeat because the damn match should have been played in 1 day. They got rid of one dumb rule and now maybe the Brits will move on to modern day and not have a curfew screwing with the schedule year after year...but I doubt they ever fix that.

It is unfair, because you always assume agenda. I suspect you never really thought about that rule until they rescinded it, only that it was a Nadal fan pointing out that it didn't make good sense, so I must have partisan reasons to say so. Turns out, though, I was just right. Now the point of the curfew is that it's in a residential neighborhood, as I mentioned above, so they're not just being quaint and British. It's the local council that imposed it when they got a roof. There may or may not be much they can do. AO and USO matches have ever gone on to 2-3am. You could see where residents might now want that. And while we're complaining about quitting early, though, RG doesn't even have lights...unless they added them with their new renovation. Now that really is antiquated.

They should switch to the 90’s grass, or find a durable hybrid that ensures that the grass plays as fast as it did in the 90’s. In my opinion, changing the speed of a surface during the tournament short-changes players that are better on that surface. Grass court specialists are cheated in my opinion. I don’t know why some players are not complaining about a surface that changes during the tournament.

As far as I know the curfew at Wimbledon isn't to do with disruption of residents or noise, etc but because people would be stranded with no trains if matches went on much later than 11. There are trains after 11 but the queues would be massive with crowds pouring out of Wimbledon.

I could be wrong but remember hearing that on TV or reading it somewhere I think.

That's an interesting point, but it is the local council that has imposed the curfew.

You are arguing 2 different points. That they should change back to faster grass is one, and there are lots who agree with you. The other one is what happens to the grass after it has been chewed up by 7-14 days of play...this is unavoidable, and weather-dependent. Now, maybe if the grass were faster, it would be less distressed by the second week. Even still, you have to understand that grass is a natural surface, and subject to the weather. Even a fast grass, in a hot summer, is going to whither and slow down. The players can't complain about that. If they're going to play on grass, they're going to live with the nature of it.

I remember @Federberg saying that the people living in that neighborhood are rich people. Rich people anyway cannot sleep peacefully and so I don't see why stop the matches in quest of a futile cause.

Yep he played his butt off on a "grass" surface that allows him to kick the ball up shoulder height with a much slower bounce than any other grass court on tour. And he still couldn't beat a crap version of Novak. Rafa would have zero Wimbledons if the grass played like it's supposed to play and we all know that.

What if it's the old grass that didn't play like grass is supposed to play? Life's mysteries...

As in grass isn't supposed to have a fast and low bounce like every other grass court event on tour and the old Wimbledon? I guess it's all about preference, I can see why Nadal fans love Wimbledon. Fed shouldnt have a measly 8 at his best major, I will give some of the blame to him but everyone knows if Wimbledon played like the rest he'd be much tougher to beat than he has been.
