I heard him say in an interview several years ago that he doesn't like the altitude or the playing surface of this tournament. He says it's completely different than RG and difficult for him to play his best.

There's something weird about this tournament whereby I have seriously never seen Nadal play well. Even when he wins, it's very unconvincing.

Probably has to do with it being more like a hard court tournament than clay. He probably still rallies here but if he doesn't he wins Rome easily.

I'd almost prefer him to win every tourney going into RG and hope he overplayed or gets too confident. Best chance to avoid the inevitable.

For statistical purposes, I hope Nadal will fail in Madrid.
It would be in line with the pattern of this season, to see a new champion in Madrid.
So Go Domi!

I see Rafa will be in Roma earlier and a little bit more rested

Done and dusted. Thiem took revenge for the shellacking of 6-2, 6-0 defeat earlier in the season.

So Go Domi!

Feels like it could be anyone left winning this tournament now aside from maybe Edmund.

Dom has beaten Nadal at Rome, Madrid and I think one of the South American clay tourneys. Pretty impressive. Is it just he and Djoker that have more than 2 wins on clay vs Nadal?

It won't be anyone. It'll be Alex or Domi.
