I suppose that he can't because his age.......when he was younger and winning tournaments at 5 sets (at his prim) then what did you say? I can imagine ...."he is the GOAT, he is the best, he is the Bethoveen of the tennis, he is unbeatable, he is the best that tennis has given us, what a elegance, the 8 wonder of the world", come on!

He wasn't that far past his prime in 2009 but was visibly fatigued in the final set against Del Potro in the 2009 USO final. He's never been a Duracell bunny like the other top players.

He had to be fatigued because Delpo made him to work too hard and obviously played better than him.
Roger didn't use to work so hard before 2007, everything was easier for him but the tour got more and more tough later and things changed drastically for him

Yeah yeah sure. He had plenty of very tough matches even in his prime. Ever watch the AO '05 semi? Incidentally he lost this one in case you haven't. Hands down some of the highest level of tennis you'll ever see and yet he lost. The tour didn't get tougher at all. The surfaces slowed down making the rallies longer and allowing the fitter guys to prevail 'cos it's now way harder to hit winners.

Front, you never said a single complimentary thing about Rafa's win, but don't worry, all your bitter posts and snide mishit propaganda shows us how highly you rate it.

Or should I say, you hate it? :devil

He played very well when he wasn't pushing but I said earlier Monfils was the one who made it a pusher fest. Definitely some great defense and stalling. The usual :p Forehand DTL still needs work though and serving was very poor from both of them. I still don't think he's playing well enough to beat Novak even in best of 3 though. Monfils would make anyone look good when he's losing 6-0 3rd sets. I missed set 3 anyway (thankfully) so hence why no comments. Any time violations from his buddy Carlos earlier? Can't really see any bitter posts btw...I merely pointed out the obvious, ie Monfils' cardio is terrible.

Monfils cardio must be really lousy, I reckon my poor old 80 year old dad woulda had the energy for three sets of pushing. :cover

By the way, Rafa wasn't playing Novak, but who was the bloke who was playing him? Because he beat him, and I bet he's not playing as good as Rafa... ;)

I've never seen a guy panting so much as him. He's always had cardio issues and considering 90% of the match he was timidly tapping the ball over the net you have to wonder what use his muscles are when he rarely strikes the ball hard. I've seen matches where he was all out aggressive blasting winners everywhere and jumping forehands but he was lifeless today and felt his pusher plan b was the way to go. Next time he should stick with what he does best, ripping fast winners everywhere. He has no chance going toe to toe in rallies even when not exerting himself as his cardio is so poor.

I see Nadal won Monte Carlo - as expected given the "competition" - when Monfils took another final set off. Is Monfils' conditioning really that poor that he can never suck it up for the final set? Or is he just mentally exhausted from all that THINKING? Etiher way - does this mean all is right in Nadal's little clay world? Is Uncle Tony off the schnide now? Or does Nadal have to win Barcelona, Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros for Uncle Tony to get off the lost-Nadal-has-clay-court-prowess hook? Or just Roland Garros? If that happens - it's going to be yet another very boring clay court season. I can already feel a nap coming on...

They weren't pushing the ball. Nobody in the world who knows tennis is going to rubberstamp that view, but you keep repeating it in the hope that it'll be accepted.

It's touching. :hug

In fairness to Monfils, he didn't clown around today but the pressure or the occasion winded him a little. He was having to concentrate fiercely and hang with the Beast for long intense rallies, and he stuck to the task as long as he could. Plus, he had a cutie sitting in his box, so my admiration for him has risen.

Even if she was there with somebody else...

Uncle Tony off the schnide now?

Heck No!! not until he provides his nephew with the proper counters to Djoker!! the goal is RG and other grand slams.. all the rest is good for his historical records but its not the ultimate goal, IMO

This was most definitely 90% a pusher fest. First few points there are like two amateurs practicing. Loopy slow balls flying miles into the air at about 10 miles per hour. Of course there were some faster shots but Monfils in particular was pushing so badly he'd make Roberto Bautista Agut (one of the kings of pushers on tour) look like Gulbis.

Rafa's counter is to hope Nole comes down to earth. It worked after 2011. Even then it might not be enough this time. Nads had his biggest title in a couple years but if he was playing remotely great he wouldn't need 3 sets against the likes of Monfils and Murray on clay.

Rafa definitely wobbled when he should have pulled away today, but nerves are understandable - but Murray is #2 in the world. He took Rafa to three sets on clay before, in 2011 and 2014, and both years Rafa won in Paris.

We need to get a bit of perspective here, it seems the Fedfans are becoming anxious. Rafa won a big tournament, but there's a long way to go before RG. And even when he was thumping everybody everywhere on the dirt, he didn't always play "remotely great" because he didn't need to.

We'll see what this means when the clay season starts to get really dirty, arounf the time Rome begins...

It's pretty sad Murray is #2. He had his one good year on clay last season. We won't be seeing a repeat again. Generally Murray has not played well in a long time, pretty poor on Roger that he isn't a couple thousand points ahead of him.

Counter or Djoker level comes back to Earth, it doesnt matter as long as Rafa is able to compete at the highest level in matches vs Djoker.

Rafa made Novak to come down to earth in 2013 and that's why the Serbian had to hire "Uncle Becker" to try to improve his game who helped a lot and more when Rafa came down due to different issues like back injury and appendix surgery which made him to go through a long way of lack of confidence like all of us have seen

He hired Becker because he was losing damn near every huge match regardless of who his opponent was.

Thanks Carol.. This antiRafa pundits keeps tryin to make Djoker look like he is some Super Tennis player that came from the planet Serbyton, he is not. Stan showed last year if you keep your ball deep and push him for 3-4 hours he will wear down. Its not impossible but it takes weapons which I am not yet convinced Rafa has his serves or strokes where they need to be be successful which takes time.

Stan was hitting lasers off both wings and has a huge serve to boot. It was all clicking that day. That is not Rafa's game needless to say.
