Great effort from Monfils in the second set.

As for Nadal, this is the moment of truth for him. Can he finish and win the match after winning the 1st set? In the past few years, you could see him lose matches like these in which he plays very well in the 1st couple of sets but can't capitalize and loses the match.

Oh Gael. Two doubles? :cover

A gift for Rafa there. Commentators saying Monfils is physically struggling, maybe injured.

The pattern so far? Rafa struggles to hold after he breaks...

There is no injury involved. Who in this world can hang with Nadal playing 30 shot rallies , in every game? You are forced to hit balls above your shoulder even in neutral rallies. In addition to that, Nadal is laying down the hammer on the forehand side. And it was a cloudy day, at that, which made life much easier for Monfils.

The second set is as patchy as the first set was great. Neither of them raising the bar here...

Great third set by Rafa, but totally shameless celebration :snicker

28th MS title, equalling the record. :clap

First big title in two years - and he dispatched Thiem, Stan and Andy along the way. Playing great tennis, the best we've seen from him in two years. :clap

Congrats to Rafa and his fans. I for one hope we have a little resurgence (although not too big ;), so at least to make this clay season competitive. I would love to see Rafa challenge Novak at Roland Garros.

Novak isn't the champion at Roland garros... ;)

Could see Monfils folding like a cheap tent a mile off there. He'll likely win 2 games max now in set 2 I reckon.

Thank God you are not Nostradamus

I'm very happy with Rafa this week. It wasn't an easy draw, but he came through it biting the cup at the end. I'm still not saying he's back until he gets through this clay season with his usual result at the end of it, but his form this week should frighten everyone...

Yeah, the first three names there are significant enough. I still say Rafa benefited from Novak's early defeat, which gave him breathing space in the draw, so he didn't have to think about a match with the dominant Serb. Rafa needs wins, and big wins, and beating two of the top four - including the FO champ - as well as Thiem, the standard bearer for the Next Generation on clay, is a good start. It'll fill him with confidence, and this will only grow if he succeeds in Barcelona next week, too...
