f*ck. only a complete meldown from Fognini will change this now. not that unlikely, though.

Two marvellous back hands to get back in the set.

Because Roger has 11 titles on clay while Novak has 13.
Also, Roger DID NOT win neither MC nor Rome, while Novak won them both more than once and more so by beating Nadal at least once in those finals.
Roger made about 5 RG finals, that’s got to be something title counts don’t tell. To me they are very close, it’s not a clear cut like el don’t know says....oh he is gonna twist something out of this too.

Agreed. Just looking at the numbers can obscure the truth

Lajovic just lost the match with these two UFE's... unless Fognini's injury plays a role, which I hope not.

Lajovic losing just too many chances...

And he has one more than Novak of those. Not a big deal, to be honest.
Agreed. That's why I'm willing to concede that his greater number of Masters Series is an argument to say that his clay accomplishments are better. I'm not sure it's enough to say that he's been better. To me that's a slightly different discussion, and subjective. They're both great

Will Fog withdraw from Barcelona? He shouldn’t continue playing all taped up.

Congrats to Fog for winning his first Masters title. If only Fog did not have a head, he would have won many more.

Interestingly, this year we already have two first time ATP 1000 winners even though only three are over at this time.

We may see more first time winners during the rest of the year. Tsitsipas, Khachanov and Medvedev are all potential candidates.

Ricardo, whenever I read one of your attacks I go back and read what you are complaining about and EVERY TIME find that you have twisted what I actually said just to try to make me look wrong.

Listen carefully: I did NOT say that Novak was as good as Borg, Rafa, and Lendl on clay...I listed him among them as players who were better than Roger. THAT IS ALL. I made no statement with regard to how he compares to those other three players.

As for Roger vs. Novak, I agree that it is close-ish but given Novak the edge for reasons Herios laid out.

Anyhow, congrats to Fabio Fognini. Could it really be that he's the first Italian to win a big title since...Adrian Panatta?! Or am I missing someone?

This season started just like the last one, 2 new winners after the first 3 masters:
2018 - Del Potro, Isner
2019 - Thiem, Fognini.

To do a variant on what I wrote above, here are the Masters winners by year, 2011-present:

2011: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Murray
2012: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Ferrer
2013: Nadal, Djokovic, Murray
2014: Federer, Nadal, Djokovic, Tsonga, Wawrinka
2015: Federer, Djokovic, Murray
2016: Nadal, Djokovic, Murray, Cilic
2017: Federer, Nadal, Zverev, Dimitrov, Sock
2018: Nadal, Djokovic, Zverev, del Potro, Isner, Khachanov
2019: Federer, Thiem, Fognini

New Masters winners in bold. I dont think it is a bold prediction to say that we'll likely have at least one more this year to make it 3+ in each of the last three years, after only three new winners in the previous six.

Well, del Potro was a new masters winner indeed, but as he was a major winner it felt differently (actually to me is really different).
