About Monte Carlo

If awards were given out for the most picturesque venue among ATP tournaments, then the Monte-Carlo Country Club would have few contenders with its stunning views over the Mediterranean.

Monte Carlo (literally "Mount Charles") is situated on a prominent escarpment at the base of the Maritime Alps along the French Riviera. Near the quarter's western end is the world-famous Place du Casino, the gambling centre which has made Monte Carlo "an international byword for the extravagant display and reckless dispersal of wealth"

Monaco is home to the Grimaldi Royal Family and has a rich heritage of sporting events including the Monaco Grand Prix. It's also home to the world-famous casino, the harbour and world-class ballet and opera.

Monte Carlo hasn’t been a mandatory masters event since 2009 but still retains it’s allure in attracting top players with good prize money, a fantastic location and rich storied history. Rafael Nadal has won here a record number of times and returns as the defending champion and overwhelming favourite.

A Little Bit of Monte Carlo Trivia

At just 0.75 square miles, Monaco is the second smallest country in the world. (The smallest, of course, is Vatican City.)

People who live in Monaco have a life expectancy of almost 90 years. Meanwhile, the literacy rate hovers around 100 per cent.

The city’s biggest attraction is the Casino de Monte Carlo. Citizens, however, are not allowed to gamble or enter the establishment.

Hollywood has long had a love affair with the tiny principality. More than 50 films have been made here.

Prince Albert II played on Monaco's national soccer team and competed in three Olympic games as part of Monaco's bobsled team.

Kokkanakis was in by virtue of a wild card anyway. Looks like Djokovic may be facing Kohlschreiber in round 2. Kohli beat Djoker last month, although it was on hards.

.. 1st Round ..
Philipp Kohlschreiber beat Taro Daniel (JPN) 6-1 6-3
Diego Schwartzman (ARG) beat 17-Kyle Edmund (GBR) 4-6 6-3 6-1
10-Daniil Medvedev (RUS) beat Joao Sousa (POR) 6-1 6-1
Radu Albot (MDA) beat Aljaz Bedene (SLO) 6-4 6-2
Mikhail Kukushkin (KAZ) beat Jeremy Chardy (FRA) 6-3 6-4
Martin Klizan (SVK) beat Federico Delbonis (ARG) 7-6(3) 7-5
Dusan Lajovic (SRB) beat Malek Jaziri (TUN) 6-4 6-4
16-David Goffin (BEL) beat Guido Andreozzi (ARG) 6-1 6-4
Marton Fucsovics (HUN) beat 12-Nikoloz Basilashvili 7-5 3-6 6-1
Lorenzo Sonego (ITA) beat Andreas Seppi (ITA) 7-6(4) 6-4
Jaume Munar (ESP) beat Lucas Catarina (MON) 6-0 6-3
13-Fabio Fognini (ITA) beat Andrey Rublev (RUS) 4-6 7-5 6-4
11-Marco Cecchinato (ITA) beat Damir Dzumhur (BIH) (Retired)
Jan-Lennard Struff (GER) beat 15-Denis Shapovalov (CAN) 5-7 6-3 6-1
Roberto Bautista Agut beat John Millman (AUS) 3-6 6-1 6-1

No big surprises on the scoreboard except maybe Shapo. Schwartzman takes out Edmund who was seeded after Monfils pulled out. I think Diego was probably the favourite in that match anyway considering the surface.

Medvedev's rout of Sousa was probably easier than you might expect.

Kohli/Djoker in round 2.

Fog was under performing badly in front of Flavia. Suddenly, he develops a spine and starts hitting the ball w/ purpose. Rublev was completely lost and never regained the lead.

Is Kokkinakis ever going to actually have a career? He's more on injured-reserve than even Del Potro. Kohly will go in with confidence, but I don't like his chances v. ND.

Scratchy Novak today, for sure, though who would want to start on a new surface v. Kohlscreiber? Completely trashed a racquet in the 2nd. In other news, Stan was serving for the match 5-4 in the 2nd v. Cecchinato and ended up losing 7-5 in the 2nd and 6-3 in the 3rd. That's on former MC champion gone. I have never thought that Stan will get back to full power, but we'll see.
