Very sad to see but not a bit unexpected really. She was a total character in interviews and when playing her best she was great to watch. Definitely will be missed and such a shame to not at least be able to defend her title same as Bartoli. That 6-2 6-2 destruction of Sharapova at the 2013 AO will never be forgotten

That match was :rolleyes: Brilliant match from start to finish :clap

Too bad she fell in the final though

I think she overplayed after AO14...that probably affected her knees.Carlos and Stacey wanted Li to be no.1 and wanted her to go into Singapore as the top seed...this would have been good for Stacey s Asian expansion idea.

It's not "shallow." Tennis is their job. It's their careers. It's not just about passion and drive to be number 1. They have a whole team of people they need to pay and their own future to think of.

If my job said we'll pay you a big bonus if you work this Saturday, I would do it.

:lolz: I promise its my last reply to you. promise!
You earn few bucks every year. These players are earning your salary in a month or a few weeks.
A player like Navarro ranked 19 earned 1.1 Million this year. You will earn that in 15-20 years or more.
Perspectives... I strongly advice you to get in touch with reality. end

Its just a process until you (I) use the ignore list. no sweat. I went through the process with "ma sherona". I am trained. And now I will stop hijacking the forum, its not my private forum that I own.

And Li Na climbs in the rankings from 6 to 5 after Aga fails in Korea. The wonders of the ranking system :D Maybe she will change her mind now;)

One of the most exciting players to watch when she's on. One of the most frustrating to watch when she's not. But a great player and a super lovely girl with a winning personality. I'm sad to see her go and wish her well in her new life. Hopefully we will see her back in some capacity in the future.

Great as her career has been, she only really got to the 'absolute top' part of her career rather late. It makes one wonder what could have been if a guy like Rodriguez had started working with her in her late teens.

I guess I see it differently - I thought she was rather condescending to her husband. I do not know why everyone seems so surprise about her retirement. Hell, if I was Li I would retire too, with over $18 million in the bank and knowing that she did not have a chance in hell of winning another major why hang around. To me she was not that good of a player. She was a mental midget.

Come on are we all this naive about why players go to tournaments?

If all top 20 players sign up for a random tournament it's OBVIOUSLY not for points its for appearance fees.

They all have to play next week in Beijing, the one in Wuhan is worth 900 points and Stacey and company along with the entire Chinese government have been endorsing it for some time now, planning it for more than 5 years...

They can't pay all 20 players appearance fees, right?

Should I mention the $2.5 million prize money or the billions it cost to set this up?

I think that's enough reasons.

I get a little annoyed at the way tennis commentators write about Li Na. It's always framed around China rather than her as a player. Tennis is an individual sport. Also each area of tennis is largely individual (WT, MT, DBs). China isn't suddenly taking over tennis just because Li Na had a wonderful breakthrough. There's a rush to claim that the narrative the same way business claims China is an unbeatable force.
Tennis.com:
"Thumbs Up: Li Na may be remembered as the most influential if not the most successful women’s player since Billie Jean King. A Chinese native who remains tied to the region, she accelerated the long-awaited growth of tennis in Asia while at the same time charming and bewitching traditional audiences with her riveting personality."

Perhaps you're right. I'm not saying I know exactly the reasons players play certain tournaments. You have to admit players don't all go to tournaments out of connection or drive for points. Many top 10 players go to smaller tournaments because they're getting a payday out of it and that matters!

overrated.....I never warmed to Li especially when I saw her in the video laughing at Venus..she was with Aravane Rezai Kirilenko and Hantukova busy mean mugging Vee at that defunct Hong Kong exho...good riddance.I understand why Venus never joined in saying farewell to Na li...

When she wasn't an UE machine, I enjoyed watching her play. Not a surprise that she's calling it a career, but obviously a loss for the WTA in light of all the exposure Asia was getting w/ Wuhan and the tour championships.

I wish her a happy retirement and success in whatever she chooses to do. :clap

she won how many titles....less than ten...didnt like the way she berated her spouse in public, maybe she did that because she wore the financial pants in the marriage.

She won what she won and that includes 2 slam titles. I can't see her not being inducted to the HOF. You don't have to like her, it doesn't change her career accomplishments. As to the way she treated her husband, they're one of the more successful relationships on tour. I won't began to try and understand their martial relationship, but something must be right between them or they would be history.

tossip,

I don't ever recall you wishing anyone a good retirement!
As a matter of fact, "good riddance" is one of your favorite terms when it comes to such threads.
You always keep a grudge because they did this to Venus or that to Serena...
It's really sad, and I mean both issues.

If you're entitled to yours, I'm definitely entitled to mine. You're the one who needs a chill pill. I read your view earlier in the thread. Repeating it over and over again doesn't make it gospel.
