Both Nadal and Federer are recovering from an injury and coming back to tour after some gap. Federer after a longer gap in fact. But that's not that much of an issue given how talented these guys are. I am only concerned that Federer might not have the same capacity right now to play long and intense five-set matches at a good level till the end as Nadal. Federer has lost some close 5 setters in the last 4 years even at Wimbledon.

His nerves have to be going; sorta like Serena who's also had trouble closing out matches! Even with a lead, there's no guarantee Roger can finish off this new generation of players! We'll see! :puzzled :nono  :dodgy: :cover

We're in uncharted territory with Federer; he's never had a gap in his career like this or been out as long. There are several possible outcomes, and we don't know which will happen: He could suffer for it and never be able to shake off the rust; he could get back to business as usual in short time; or he could actually benefit from the longest rest he's had in his career. We'll know when it happens.

he had a gap at the end of 2005 but not so long and he was much, much younger so we have to wait and see what happens, even his doctors can't predict how his body'll react after such a long pause

"If he would be injury free" is the operative clause. Regardless of how the results occurred, rankings don't lie. Sure, if he's healthy he should be able to finish in the top 5.

Are you sure that Roger is going to be "injury free"? or the others? don't you think that some players has taken enough advantage of Rafa's injuries? I do, so maybe now it's his time, you never know

Again, you're making stuff up. Of course there are question marks about Roger - that's why I'm putting him in the same category with Rafa and not as more likely for success.

And you never know: Robin Soderling could come back and finally win Roland Garros :p

Yep, if Rafa would have his knee in the worst conditions he would lose against Soderling or anyone. And also maybe Stakhovsky would beat Roger in Wimbledon again, you never know :p

Um, no. He destroyed Hewitt the match before. Soderling just played amazing. Credit where credit is due. Likewise Roger didn't appear too physically hampered against Stakhovsky. Fact is, he had no answer for the aggressive serve and volley barrage that was coming at him that day. Neither guy lost because of injury that day and high time to stop repeating that. Federer's match was much closer with all the tiebreaks and could've gone either way btw.

Oh, I almost forgot that Rafa got the knee injury boarding the airplane and that was why he couldn't play in Wimbledon and later was off for almost three months.......:lolz:

Rafa has only ever lost due to injury. Don't you know that, Front? Otherwise he'd be 1107-0 now, with 28 Slams.

Nope, Rafa has lost without injuries and without "mono" too

Sorry, I got it wrong. Without injuries he'd be like 1102-5, with 26 Slams.

I'd like to know why Carol puts quotes around "mono". Do you have some independent verifiable source that casts doubt on the fact that Federer had mono for the first part of the 2008 season? I assume it's because in your mind the fact that he had it would in some way diminish Rafa's victories against him that year in Australia, French, and Wimbledon? I assume the same logic holds for why Novak (who's finished #1 for, I believe, a total of 4 different years, only achieved that ranking (and the majority of his slams), according to your posts many times, due to "weak competition" every year he won. Translation: Rafa was always suffering from a bad knee, or sore wrist, or a crisis of confidence, or a weak serve, or......? And you wonder why most on the forum think you're a blind fangirl who gives no (or very little) credit to the achievements of players other than Rafa? (This excludes your newfound admiration for Murray, since Murray wins means that Novak doesn't, and "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"!)

Guys, Federer's to play at IPTL event as of now. The announcement of the organisers has come. It's official.

http://www.sportinglife.com/tennis/news/article/553/10673139/iptl-2016-roger-federer-to-make-injury-return-for-indian-aces

That's the link. He will play for the Indian Aces team. So he's back to the team. It's the Indian leg at Hyderabad where he is supposed to play. :)

I would think Roger has taken this decision after good deliberation. If he hadn't been feeling 100% he would not have decided to play the event; that is not him. What's good is he can get some good match practice before Australia even though these are hardly matches. At least, it will help him get in touch with his peers and get some rhythm. Then there's Hopman Cup. I am happy to see him next month.

Yeah, and more official than that link, Federer's Twitter page confirms it too. Can't say I'll be watching it but good to at least have the opportunity to see him hit a few balls before January. Btw, this will upset Carol, but Federer is most definitely not going bald.

He's always had a high hairline and this not the same as having big patches of no hair, i.e. actual bald spots otherwise you could say Caroline Wozniacki is going bald 'cos she has a very high hairline too and it's always been that way.
