I remember the day when doing impressions of other players made you a bad guy...

:popcorn Can't wait to see how this one plays out. :popcorn

Or dancing with ball boys after the match...terrible

Or celebring a tournament final win......horrible

Post of the week! :laydownlaughing

Another weird horrible thing about this Nick sledging incident is how it's all playing out as Twitter tittle tattle. Stan, you old clown, he insulted your girlfriend and you have a cry about it on TWITTER? :cover Why not break a racket over the idiot's head? Shove him up against the lockers, like Roddick did to Djoker, or front him on court, like Connors did to Mac? Nah, instead he snitches and complains on Twitter?

He really is a crybaby....:cover

The worst part about Kyrgios' behavior is something very few are actually commenting on. It's not that he insulted Stan, but who the hell is he to feel entitled to reveal intimate details about this girl's life? A girl who happens to be a tennis player, by the way.

That's it, and as somebody said above, how does Kokkinakis feel about this? But also, how does the girl feel about it? It's an appalling lapse of taste, but coming from him, it seems normal...

Rogers Cup (Men) - Montreal

I actually like Kyrgios ;) That was pure fun... what he said to Stan "the man" :)
No one wants to watch Lendl/Rafa/Federer type of players all the time ;)
We just need Johnny Mac and "Nick the Greek" Kyrgios in this sport... admit it ;)

Admitted! For all his sorry antics, the kid is a brat and gets the blood boiling, like Mac did...

Uh yeah no, sorry. I don't want to hear about a poor girl's sex life on the court. There are other ways to be a "character."

You may need him, but we don't. Sorry buddy, what he did is not fair play. To insult your opponent through the match, so you play games with his mind and lose his focus is low.

No we don't. Mac backed it up. This loser will never back anything up. At the age of twenty, having won nothing, the guy feels entitled. Jeez, I thought JJ was bad...:nono

It is interesting, this idea that the sport needs "characters". I think McEnroe and Connors were terrible and I hated them, and everything they stood for, and I abhorred Agassi with great ease, and Nick is obviously a despicable and dastardly person. The sport needs them? In a sense, it does, when we look at a broad strokes aspect, beyond the game and into the "personalities" etc.

But I can't think of a single "character" in the sport I actually like, and the reason i dislike them is down to them thinking that they're "characters." Henri Leconte being a prime example of a humourless fool who thinks he's funny. Heaven help us, there are people who agree with him, and think he's funny too. But idiots like him, or any of the other stuff I slate Djoker over, or Monfils, or any other "characters" is just a symptom of their own social awkwardness and a need to be liked. With Nick, and McEnroe, it's nasty and malicious, and has terrible consequences for others around them - in this case Stan's girlfriend. So while I welcome Nick's erratic behaviour, it comes at a price. I like his brashness and his ability to rile great players and stay with them and the cockiness and all, but the tanking and sledging? No...

Monfils is not mean spirited ...he is always respectful to the media ball kids and jokes with umpires. He is well liked in the locker room and Wawrinka is his good friend.
Joko is mean to the ball kids

You know what got to me most about what he said? Bringing somebody else into the mix and I am not even talking about the poor girl. You know, we have all heard stuff like "I did such and such to your girlfriend/mother/wife" in the playground...it is a part of trash talking and it still goes on today. But saying Kokk did this to your girl is cowardly. Like he had no balls to say "I did this to your girlfriend" It does not have to be true, it is what trash talking is all about...Posturing. What he said was not trash talking, it was bringing two unrelated people to a situation that they did not need to be in. Disrespecting Stan is almost secondary.
Hewitt should talk to this guy and set him straight, or just dump him. He is making Hewitt look bad.

RE: Rogers Cup (Men) - Montreal

Lleyton Hewitt was a character (and even then he crossed the line. The Blake incident was embarrassing). Nick Kyrgios is just an entitled jerk whose mouth far eclipses his abilities/accomplishments.

I don't know why a "character" has to be something verging on the negative anyway. Roger Federer is a character. He's smart, honest, confident, arrogant, good, walks with a swag, etc... Those are good "characteristics."

Now, yes, I want diversity in tennis. I want someone like Hewitt or Roddick, or hell, even Mac. I can't believe I'll say this but I'll even accept someone like Gulbis (only someone who can actually win matches) because at least he's funny. I'm the last person who wants everything to be PC and for people to jump on players for the slightest mishap. Tennis fans are entitled/elitist enough as it is.

But sorry, telling someone that his girlfriend, who happens to be a professional tennis player (which means that people know her, or at least, will google her), got "banged" by another player, in the middle of the match, is not my idea of a character. First of all, it's an at best irresponsible behavior towards the girl herself, then it's terrible behavior towards your best friend who had no part in this and you just threw under the bus, and finally, it's a dirty piece of tactic to get in your opponent's head.

Funnily enough, around these parts, taking extra time in between points is reprehensible "gamesmanship" to try to get in your opponent's head...but telling them that their significant other spread her legs for someone else is not anything worth commenting on, because that will have no affect on them whatsoever. But yeah, Kieran and I are the hypocrites who apply double standards...

Perfect. Exactly my sentiments. I would have preferred if Kyrgios had just said "don't expect me to walk away from this match like you did to your family."

Doesn't matter man. He beat Nadal at Wimbledon once so he's earned some fans for life.

Well, that last part is very true, and of course, we know why this happens. :dodgy:

But I'm thinking on my feet here a bit. Nick is volatile and certainly young. He has "character" in the good sense: he can be ballsy and unafraid of big reputations. But he's also becoming what's dangerously termed "a character", because he's unpredictable, even to himself, and he can lose the head and tank games, he gestures and swears and generally comes across as grumpy and brattish, and now he's crossed a particular rubicon that we haven't seen before, and which everybody agrees is unacceptable.

I prefer players who have character, than players who are characters. Okay, so why do I think "characters" are welcome, even the terrible characters like McEnroe? Because tennis can't be all polite say-the-right-thing automatons, but also, I think players who push and nudge and scream, and upset their opponents with gamesmanship, are a particular kind of challenge and they add drama and spice to the occasion.

And then if they break the rules - hammer them.

Nick went over the line in a big horrible way, and I don't think he could control himself. This is what's fascinating about him. Whether or not he gets it under control, is an ongoing inquiry. By the way, I disagree with brother Murat, when he said Nick let Hewitt down. Hewitt was a punk as a kid, and stood accused of racism during a match, another unacceptable lapse. But if anyone was let down last night, it was TK, and the girl (sorry, dunno her name, too lazy to Google her). And Nick too, because he humiliated himself...
