I really hope they can fix him up, and that he can return to some semblance of his old power and form. Optimistic, I know. He didn't sound that sure, even of a return. That was tough to watch, with him clutching that cushion. Suerte, Juan Martín.

His video talk got to me. Who can't support this guy? He's too good to be done. I made a Twitter message from Tennis Frontier to del Potro. If you have a Twitter account, please pop over and send him your message!

Poor Juan, this sad but expected news brought me down. A miracle is needed. Hope we can see him back on a court one day.

If they can give him a new tendon, he could play for sure. ( I don't have enough insight on the problem, but it has to be very very very bad)
I am gutted for DelPo, the whole speech he gave us is very sad and doesn't breathe much hope into us, such a nice guy, with a beautiful game. He is defo on my faves list, even being the underachiever he is.

Sucks for poor Del Potro. One thing I noticed is he's wearing a watch on the damaged wrist. Now maybe it's pretty loose but I hurt my wrist doing forearm curls in the gym and stopped wearing my watch as it aggravated it and felt better when I stopped wearing it. Seems like a minor thing but it really made a difference to me not wearing one which I don't any more as a result.

There is a bit of an update with more information in Cancha Llena. The upshot is: after formally dropping out of Wimbledon, they speculate that he might be done for the year.

On Twitter, JMDP: "Hi, I'm here recuperating from surgery. All went well. I appreciate from the bottom of my heart every's interest, and support."

The surgeon was Dr. Richard Berger. (My note: that is the doctor who has been treating him since the first wrist surgery.)

That sounds like a bad omen. These doctors asked him to keep playing last year at IW etc, even though he complained of pain. They simply told him, just play everything will be fine and JMDP listened to them as well.

I hear you, and this is why I made the comment. I even googled, to make sure it was the same doctor. I'm no doctor, and what can I say, but it seems when that guy told him to keep playing through the pain, and then that ended up to be wrong, he should have found another doctor. JM does say he's getting other opinions, but he's still trusting his wrist to the same guy. I know that this isn't "tragic" in real-world terms, but it borders on it, in tennis-terms.

I'm shocked that he had the same guy do it. But then again, I have an unbalanced distrust of doctors and some of their practices. I'm now wondering if Juan has a good group of advisers around him.

Well, isn't this the guy who fixed the other wrist? In that case is not that bad...

^^yes it is..

the ironic thing being that the 1st and only surgery on his serving racquet holding hand/arm/wrist has been fine since the op in may 2010..

but the old 2hbh or 'other' wrist is giving him no end of grief. 3 operations on that. please recover.

I wouldn't really say his right wrist is fine either. Maybe it doesn't hurt but the power is greatly diminished. He hasn't been hitting the ball anywhere near as hard on the forehand side since 2009 and his rally forehand is pretty pedestrian these days in the few matches we've seen this and last year.

May be the doctor was a specialist on right hands. :puzzled;)

C'mon, GSM, be rational. Everyone knows that right hand specialists can use a mirror to operate on left hands.

It's true he hasn't hit with the same power and confidence, though I wondered if he was tentative about it, more than "weaker," though it could amount to the same thing. But he was only coming back to full form for a few months when the other one started bothering him, so it might be hard to judge how fully fixed the right one is.

Quite possible yeah that he's worried about hurting it again but even with that in his head, it'll likely never be the same again Same as it being sore really if he's wary of hitting harder and with 2 like that I'm sadly not seeing a happy ending for him.
