^ I agree with all that and especially that his serving won him the match in 2007 but BS was talking about 2008 ;)

Ah! Re: 2008, I certainly agree with you. I think Roger was carrying a lot of mental baggage after the mauling in Paris. Another match I went to... regrettably! It was only in the 3rd set, he said.. what the hey! He almost pulled it out of the bag. I still can't understand how that match was allowed to go on after about the 8th game in the final set. I lived just a 5 minute walk away from the courts... trust me.. I wouldn't have continued a hit about with that visibility. It was very very dark. I can only think that Rafa was able to cope with the darkness better than Roger. Yes, both player experienced the same conditions, but that's not really tennis anymore.. Before the Rafa fans kick up a stink, I'm not trying to turn back history. I just found it difficult to understand why the match was still being played

I felt that Rafa was always better from the baseline in all of their Wimbledon matches. Even the one from 2006. He would win >50% of neutral baseline rallies. This despite having a worse backhand and forehand. However as usual Rafa was a wall and he eventually would get Federer to lose rhythm and he'd lose important games during the set and it would be over. In the early matches, Roger had a pretty huge edge on the serve and return so he'd start off most points as the aggressor. It wasn't until recently that Rafa's serve has become so much better and Roger's return so much worse where the dynamic is really upside down (Roger starts almost all points behind)

Yeah heard that from people in Wimbledon at the time and naturally it doesn't look anything like it does on tv but as you said, same conditions for both of them. It is what it is but it certainly wasn't ideal to at least have floodlights on. It just becomes guess work at that stage and not tennis as you said.

Sorry, I should have titled this thread "Wimbledon 2008" or "Nadal v. Federer v Nole" or "Anything other than whether Roger's 2014 is going to look like some of Ferrer's better years" [smile]

Cheers!

Ferrer says he's losing his physical edge. Maybe he should quit smoking.

:laydownlaughing I told you that your subject heading would veer people off. I know you didn't really mean to compare them as players, but folks took it that way. Until Monte Carlo starts, all threads mostly just go to "Nadal v. Fed v. Nole," with some vague attention to Davis Cup.

As to your point, I think Roger will wander around in the 3-5, occasionally 8 range for the next couple of years. I don't think he's getting up to #2 again, nor #1. However, if the stars aligned, he might just grab one more Slam. But he absolutely has to be in the top 4 to pull that off, IMO.

^ Well given he hasn't much to defend besides the Rome final the next few months (potentially tons to gain at Wimbledon even if he fails to defend his Rome points which he most likely won't) he's in with a great shot of getting to #3 already.

I sort of agree with you Moxie... except you never know with draws. I think the stars could easily align.. even if he isn't in the top 4. We all thought Novak had a straight forward draw in Australia, not having to face any of Rafa, Fed, or Murray until the final. You never know!
