August, you missed out Cincy completely in your scheduling. Things are messier.

Accidantally had both Toronto and Montreal instead of Toronto and Cincy. Corrected the post. Not any messier, anyway.

This thread was started in Fed. 2014. I still don't know the answer to the question in the title of the thread. Does any one know?

I wrote the ITF. If they reply, I'll let everyone know.

It's logical for OG to change of surface every 4 years, Masters should do the same so Manacors' bull could win at least 1...Rio is (of course) on clay, so a Spanish or South Am 'll clinch gold . Poor Murray !!

In fact, what people say here in Brazil is that it will be on hards. It will be on a completely new venue (as all things in the world cup/olympics).

Also, people were saying is that they want to attract the top ranked players to the Rio 500 tournament changing it to hards (so it would be a good warmup to Indian Wells/Miami). So, the same venue used on the olympics would later be used on the tournament.

But all I am doing is to reproduce what I read from random local sources over the last year and a half.

I had a rummage around the interwebz last week..no relevant information was available, clearly this means the ioc big cheese's haven't decided on hc/clay yet.

I believe its a new build tennis site, so hopefully it'll become part of any wta/atp tourneys post-2016.

The ITF replied, and told me it will be a hard court.

Thanks tented. So, I now have higher hopes on #1 item on Fed's bucket list.

You should have checked the official Rio 2016 website for news, this news article came out in 2013:

"He also pointed out that the Olympic tournament will be held on fast courts and that it will be worth 1,000 points in the international circuit and, regarding this, it is only less than what the four Grand Slam tournaments award"

^ Yes, but they also released this image of what it would look like, and that's not a hard court:

It is also wrong on another count. Olympics is worth only 750 points and not 1000 (unless they
have changed it recently; but ATP would usually announce such changes promptly if they did).
Anyway, the mention of fast courts in that page is new as we all looked in various places to
find the answer and could not in Feb. 2014.

its a bit odd that 2 articles in rio2016 website and 'the rio times' gushed and simpered about the tennis center development but failed to mention what surface it would be,,

did they say why everyone was being so secretive ?.

Here's their entire reply:

"It will be a hard court.

With kind regards,

It's a new complex so it's not completed yet, that's why there are no photos of it. I remember reading about it months ago. It was a surprise to me that you didn't know it till yesterday, but you have the official confirmation now.:clap

Maybe they changed the points distribution for 2016? Another question for ITF.:D

I think everyone is aware of that.

Given the nature of the confusion, building delays, and other problems surrounding the Rio Olympics, I don't take a remark by Kuerten referring to "fast courts" as proof of anything.

Maroon clay inside, red clay outside? ;) I'd rather call that a red HC.

Anyway, HC makes the most sense, clay the least given it's played in the USO lead-up and there was already grass after the clay season. Seems like a sensible decision, even though more variety in Olympic surfaces would be cool.

Crikey Billie, that's a fairly lame and rude attempt at sarcasm. You think there was something wrong with Tented asking the ITF for info about one of their own events?

If you knew so much, why didn't you let us all know earlier? :cover
