This probably speaks to why there are so many issues between players and officials absolutely no consistency in policing the rules. When one tournament let’s you get away with things and another doesn’t, it is going to cause players to lash out. Do I agree with it no, but I also don’t agree with tournaments not being consistent in policing their rules. If it warrants defaulting a match, do it. If you don’t, it carries over to another tournament and gets defaulted. I think a player would naturally lose it and say well why am I being defaulted the same thing happened and I was allowed to continue to play. You can’t have it both ways. These officials have as much blame on this as players do. Consistency across the board helps remove any grey area.
Point taken officials have to make sure all the rules are adhered to in a match, consistency, also players have to know the rules as well
Shapo would not have jumped the net if he knew the rule....it does work both ways

Umpires are human beings, and they make choices. I don't think that completely lets players off from going ballistic. That's why the ATP/WTA/ITF can have a say later, if something was abusive and should be reviewed. I actually think that tennis has been working towards consistency, therefore the electronic review, the stricter adherence to time rules, via a time clock, etc.

If Shapo didn't know that rule at this point in his career, I don't know what to say.

The players should know the rules, but the official still could have used his jurisdiction to make sure he never forgot the rule in the future and to punish him for his terrible behavior. To my point, you can’t have Miami officials deciding to enforce a rule and then Madrid officials deciding eh it doesn’t matter. Players remember that stuff. All officials have to decide to be sticklers for the rules. Dock points for being late from the bathroom. Award entire games. Default.

We are having a perfect storm here. Players not being sufficiently punished for bad behavior. We also have a lack of consistency across tournaments in which apparently some officials don’t care and some do. Those that do are having a harder time of things because of the officials that don’t do their job.

At this point of his career Shapo should know he cannot jump the net ....no excuses for him....period.He has been on the tour long enough to know that,.he was lucky to not have been defaulted., the umpire was generous towards him, apart from his usual mouthing off he does in a match.,which does him no favors.I am afraid at this point, until he gets his emotions intact and not carry on like a Brat on court I have no time for him as a player.

My point: Stop being generous to players. Medvedev, Zverev, and Shapovalov should have all seen harsher punishments than they received from officials for their poor behavior. Default them. Suspend them for several tournaments. I am not making excuses for him. I said punish him. Clearly, they aren’t doing him any favors by letting him carry on because it is starting to show in other tournaments.

This isn't like the old days! Comp. is stiffer and you can't get away w/ coming back at your own pace! Thiem still hasn't gotten thru the 1st RD.!
That’s right, he’s relatively slow getting his form back, which is actually fairly natural..

Just wishful thinking on some of our parts! When Rafa goes down, a lot of the time it's frustrating when it's leaked he had an injury! Like I really care! How many people has he run to death knowing they're injured? Whenever I hear that BS about his ailments I yawn! It's like he might as well say to all of us, "If I lose a match, it ain't legit!" Novak takes his losses with aplomb, smiling, hugging the guy, and speaks to him while Rafa's snarling and stomps off! It's the way I see it anyway! :fearful-face: :face-with-tears-of-joy:
In fairness, that’s the way winners take defeat. I remember Sampras losing to Safin in a tight bad tempered match in Australia and Pete looked like somebody kicked his dog. We never saw the Pistol gurning at the net, all jolly in defeat, giggling and cuddling his opponent, sharing air kisses.

“Love your outfit!”

“Really? It’s just a little number I got from Lacoste, they have them in yellow too but I really feel the red brings out my cheeks.”

“Absolutely! Goes really well with your racket as well. Anyway, that was a marvellous games of tennis, well done you! I hope you enjoy your next match too!”

As for Rafa and his injuries, he’s not injured after every loss, come on, don’t exaggerate! He’s only injured after losing big matches.. :lol6:

This Tsitsipas/Sinner match is rivaling the Swiatek/Azarenka yesterday for long first set. It has everything, too...umpire bobbing in and out of the chair for challenged calls and holes on the court, breaks and breaks back, high-wire acts, midgets, clowns, etc. 5-4 on serve in the first. Sinner up next.

Well, that was some set of tennis. What me to tell you what happened? Tie-break was also very back and forth, but then Tsitsipas closed down two points in quick succession. Going to be a blow for Sinner to have lost such a hard fought hour-and-I'm-not-sure-what, but he's got the crowd behind him.

The crowd can only help so much, no? As Pete used to say, I cannot pass the ball.

True enough, and I see Sinner is down a break in the 2nd. The crowd can help, I think, lift a bit when you get the inevitable sink after losing a set like that one. Sinner got an early break back in the first. We'll see.

It's likely over. Tits secured a 2nd break and now he's at MP.

Ruud's one of the most anonymous top players ever! I keep seeing his name but haven't seen him play that much over the yrs! He's just there! :shushing-face:
His claim to fame is clay, though has done well on HC, though his clay game has gone missing of late, glad he found it just before RG

Ruud's not really done all that well at most high profile tourneys like the Masters and Majors so that's a lot of it I think.

He hasn't ever made it to the QF's of a Major. Making the finals at the Miami Masters and now reaching the SF's of the Italian Open he's finally started to make more noise. The biggie is the French Open, and for a clay courter in the premiere red clay event he's never even made it to the 4th round there. So if seeded #8 at Roland Garros let's see how well he does. However if Felix AA can pull the upset of Novak he will be surpassing Ruud for the 8th slot, would be intriguing because then their SF match would decide the 8th and final quarter slot at Roland Garros.
