The Players

As usual, a top class field will appear at Indian Wells with all the big names making the trip. The only exception to the rule is defending champion Victoria Azarenka who recently had a baby.

Serena Williams is the top seed but Angelique Kerber gets another opportunity to wrestle away the top ranking if the chips fall in her favour.

In-form Karolina Pliskova is one to watch and Simona Halep, Dominika Cibulkova and Aga Radwanska will also compete for the silverware.

About Indian Wells:

Indian Wells is the 5th largest tennis tournament in the world. It is a co-ed event. Since Larry Ellison purchased both the tournament and the IW Tennis Garden in 2009, his vision has been to make it one of the biggest and best tournaments in tennis. Located in the Coacochela Valley in California, and on the edge of Joshua Tree National Park, the venue is spectacularly situated, but is subject to the complications of desert weather.

Incorporated in 1967, it lies in between Palm Desert and the resort town of La Quinta. As of the 2013 census, the city population was 5,165.

The No 1 ranking is in play once again at IW.Serena Williams can secure the No 1 ranking, but if she falls before the s/finals.Kerber will return to the No 1 spot.If Kerber makes the fourth rd,q/finals or s/finals,then Serena must make the final to retain No 1.

If Kerber makes the final,Serena must win the title to retain the No 1 ranking.

Defending Champion Azarenka who defeated S.Williams in 2016 is on maternity leave.
