Berdych handles Stakhovsky without much trouble! advances in the Wawrinka-less Wawrinka draw!

And if he goes deep enough, he may recapture the top 8 ranking position he lost recently

Give what? Because I don't like Rafa's play that entitles YOU to mock me? One more and I will get myself banned for good! Don't play me; you're supposed to be a moderator, not a jerk! :devil :nono

If you express a strong opinion, you leave yourself open to opposition. However, no one asked you to open yourself up to mockery by bringing in RHWOA...you did that yourself. Take it on the chin, bubba. And I'm not a moderator.

Birdman should have a clear path to the QFs.

rafa looks decent enough so far. still got all his boring tics though.

Rafa's tics = OCD (Obsessive Compulsory Disorder). It is a known fact.
It is not a sever case because it does not affect his performance level.
My point is he cannot get rid of them.

Some of the greatest athletes have had and have some kind of tics. It's very known that Michel Jordan had and Messi too. When Rafa was younger he didn't, later more and more. I wouldn't mind if he stop with that but I don't think he will, it's just a habit and not a OCD which is something very diferent
Anyway to me and for many more to watch his game is a pleasure, we don't put too much attention on his tics, we see in others players worse things :dodgy: :nono

Rafa doesn't have OCD, and it probably makes light of those who do by saying so. Neither is he superstitious. Both things he has explained. It's about focusing his mind, his on-court habits, which he uses to "be in the moment," as I understand it. For all of those who admire his focus, which is widely considered the best in the game, it would also be fair to respect what it takes to get it. All the tics are just in service to focusing the mind. If you admire the presence of mind, I think you have to forgive the tics.

I could already tell that Nadal seems more relax and more confident this year than last year (in which I saw him practice live). The key now for him is to maintain that positive momentum going forward. It will be interesting to see how he handles the top players towards the later stages of the tournament.

In an interesting note, Nadal will play doubles tomorrow against his compatriot and fellow champion here at Indian Wells, Marc Lopez. It will be interesting to see if Lopez and Granollers can beat the team of Nadal and Carreno Busta.

What an effort from Nick. He didn't win, but he came damn close against quality opposition.

I played and taught for over 30 years and I never twisted my ankle on court! Strange that it happens so often in the pros! I've had balls all around my feet, tip toeing around, and never even came close to injuring myself! :nono :puzzled :cover

Maybe you should have taken up ballet....;) it all comes down to footwork I guess, though I have seen plenty of players slip and fall on all surfaces

Only lost 7 points on his serve, so it wasn't such a bad serving day. OK, some of that is opponent, and first serve percentage must come up.

Exactly. As he goes deeper in these tournaments, he needs to have his first serve percentage above 65 (imo).

Checked the stats and first serve was 52%.

The impression I got watching (the entire) match, that in fact it was such a bad serving day, but the opponent hid it.

Well, I don't know what some people were watching yesterday but Nadal was in fact pretty good with his serve, very effective without any doubts
Today he and Carreño are going to play against two fellow countrymen, his former partner López and Granollers, it's going to be very interesting

^It wasn't so bad, and it was effective, but it could be better. For context, though: Nadal served a 52% first serve percentage and won 96% of his first serves. Federer served 49% vs. Schwartzman and won 83% of them. And no one complained about Federer's serving.

From the opponent standpoint, Schwartzman is #63 in the world, with better ground strokes, and a much better return of serve. Sijsling is #134 in the world.

For the record, I was the one that initially mentioned Rafa's serve - not as a complaint, but an observation. Both of them need to up their first serve percentage as they advance in the draw.

^I agree it needs to get better and I said so earlier. I also mentioned the opponent. I'm neither as optimistic as Carol, nor as pessimistic as Mrzz. I merely mention Federer as in he shouldn't get a complete pass. Djokovic, for example served 74% vs Baggy. Obviously, you play to the player across the net, but both boys are going to need to pick it up on the serve.

I would like to mention Ferrer and Verdasco in doubles, who I cannot remember to have been playing together ever, had a very good win, eliminating Boppana & Nestor in straight sets.
