i just watched the replay of Alexander Zverev Jr defeating the great ROGER FEDERER.

quite impressive for such a young man - against the most successful player in men's tennis history -

it should be considered of course that such a day as this -- a young man comes to his own against a legend such as roger -- and roger is NOT anything close to his heights.

YET -- against quite plenty of others =- including highly experienced and accomplished ones -- we know Roger can still win very convincingly.

so -- what do people think of this ZVEREV? i always thought he is really quite a future top player - good easy movement for a tall fellow...he can play all-court -- very good powerful serves - nice return and has a good disciplined mind, i think.

and comes from a russian tennis family - from his dad that reached 46 or something in his career in the 1990's - and has his brother Mischa who is accomplished in his own right.

I think Mayer could win because these young guys usually don't make two feats in a row :(

Not the final I was expecting... and close to call... Mayer has a nice game for grass but hoping for Sascha Zverev to prevail and win his first grass court title... first of many I hope.

Who have you got?

me - too -- anyone that can play out Roger -- even at this late stage in Roger' career --

HAS to be QUITE a real talent, imo.

you don't get defeat ROGER under ANY period - regardless of his current difficulties -
just like that UNLESS you're really quite talented.
even in his late years , lack of match-toughness , and of course the toll that the years have taken on roger -- he is STILL beyond the reach to overcome by MANY players far more experienced than ZVEREV imo. that's just owing to how great Roger really is.

so -- I too put my hopes on this young talent. it's good that he STARTS his winning career, especially on grass -- BY this victory over the great legend - Roger Federer.

it is RIGHT - and a very gracious way of 'passing on the torch by roger" ..to a younger future top star. in some way. don't you agree ?

Roger is coming back from injury and not had much tennis, but even so, young Zverev is a big talent for the future. Thiem and Zverev have been particularly impressive this season and I like them both. Both have the potential to be future Number Ones in my opinion. Thiem is a little further along with his development but Sascha Zverev is motoring up the rankings. I thought he'd been in the Top 20 before he was 20... the way he is going he might end up in the Top 10.

very good points. of course be keeping an eye out on the development of the competition as the younger ones come of age -- zverev naturally wouldn't escape notice from any of us.

but I am quite surprised that he has quite steadily -- but much more ''quietly'' -- come up this past several months . obviously he is very young relatively in today's tennis that has so many more veterans STILL doing very well even into their late 20's and past 30...while the others like Thiem already are really making a splash. and he will need time to fully grow into his own.

but it's ALWAYS nice to see the young ones come and actually test themselves , make their opportunities count against the legends like roger ..

the state of the sport is going to be OK. as we will have a crop of players among the ''POST-federer/nadal/djokovic/murray" era to contest each other with already very promising games.

that's nice.

Mayer breaks back, on serve. 3-3

Sascha doesn't seem to welcome pressure from the net and Mayer is getting in there on good approaches. Mayer is playing a pretty good all round match, liberal use of droppers, nice changes of pace... smart player.

...and some great lobs from Mayer they needed to be when you're playing a guy of 6 foot 6 inches.

2 championship points for Florian.

Yeah, he hasn't played much the last two years, been ravaged by injury. Should have won this match already really, had two match points... Zed has dug deep though and been impressive in the clutch. Close match.

Congrats Mayer!!!!:dance2:
I can't believe that his ranking is so low, I don't see many players playing better than him
