^Cuevas is a bit like that. This year he lost a few first rounds to on the South American swing (where he usually wins a lot), and them went on to play his best tournaments on IW and Miami.

If only Rafa had chosen to play in Hamburg and just reached the final, he would have become #1 in the rankings. But, he chose to wait. A good move. This year Rafa did not play in meaningless SA clay tourneys and also in meaningless post-Wimbledon clay tourneys. Although in general, this is a good move, I think only reason Rafa is doing this is because he is currently confident. Once he loses confidence, he starts playing in all kinds of meaningless clay tourneys.

He really did that once because he had to, as you say, for confidence. I don't see that becoming a regular function, even when he declines.

Nope, he has done it many times; definitely more than once.

If you mean he's played Hamburg more than once, yes, of course, before the tournament moved, as Roger did, too. I thought we were talking about the clay events after Wimbledon and before the USO HC swing. I can't think of any other time since he's been an elite player, but I'm not looking it up.

Kicker kicked out Paire. Argentinians are good at kicking.

4 players out of the 8 remaining are from Argentina: Delbonis, Mayer, Kicker, Schwartzman.

From those the only one I never saw playing is Kicker. The rest are surely good players. Anyway Kicker kicked Paire so I am a fan already.

I have not seen such a high ball toss in my life like Delbonis has.

Results from the German Open Men's Singles Quarterfinal matches on Friday
Florian Mayer (Germany) beat 6-Diego Schwartzman (Argentina) 6-2 2-6 6-3
Philipp Kohlschreiber (Germany) beat Nicolas Kicker (Argentina) 7-6(6) 4-6 6-4
Leonardo Mayer (Argentina) beat Jiri Vesely (Czech Republic) 7-6(4) 6-3
Federico Delbonis (Argentina) beat 3-Karen Khachanov (Russia) 7-5 3-6 6-4

Kicker gets kicked out by Kohli.

Wasn't really expecting a strong showing from Florian Mayer here but he takes care of the halfling and books a semi final slot.

Seeds free SF here. what is peculiar here for all 4 players remaining, they all were well below their best in the career. Now they have a very chance to rebound with many points on the table.

Don't forget that before Kohli kicked Kicker out, Kicker kicked out a pair, including Paire.

Kicker played toe to toe against Kohli. It was his lack of experience which was the difference IMO. I think the guy could become a top 50 player in the future.
