I think Tiriac is going a bit overboard with his criticism. If Federer was in his mid-twenties, then sure - but he's 35, knows his body and has probably earnt the right to be selective at this stage of his career. If the choice is No Federer v Part-Time Federer, then I'm sure most fans would take the latter.

If Federer was in his mid-twenties, then sure - but he's 35, knows his body and has probably earnt the right to be selective at this stage of his career. If the choice is No Federer v Part-Time Federer, then I'm sure most fans would take the latter.

As far as Isner...well, let's see how he is feeling at 35.

Tiriac is a self-interested showman. As to the Isner quote, I think it was innocuous. Of course he'll be in, because he's just there to gin up points and revenue. Roger is actually trying to protect another potential Major.

I think after Australia, Roger has come to the realisation that going into a major feeling healthy and rested is going to pay bigger dividends than grinding out the tour... Wimbledon was always his #1 target and he's just giving himself the best chance. He was also wary about clay after feeling physically uncomfortable on it last year.

There are rules about how many mandates you have after a certain number of wins, at least, and years on tour. I'd have to look it up, but I know Fed has reached some level, as has Nadal. Not sure if age, per se is one.

Reading the article it is much much lighter than the word "slams" indicates (at least to this non-native English speaker). The guy is complaining that one of his biggest sources of revenue is not showing. I do not agree with him, but it is not like he went personal. As for Isner... I do not even see it as criticism.

Yes, but beside those, there is the one that I mentioned, that is once the player is 31 he can chose which and how many tournaments he will play, nothing is compulsory for him, neither there is set number of tournaments they have to play in a year. That rule applies now to Rafa from today because he just turned 31.

1.08 Reduction of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Commitment
A. A player’s number of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 commitment tournaments shall be reduced by one (1) tournament for reaching each of the following milestones:
1) 600 matches (as of 1 January of the commitment year);
2) 12 years of service;
3) 31 years of age (as of 1 January of the commitment year).
If all three (3) conditions are met then the player has a complete exemption from the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 player commitment.

For some reason my recorder wasn't set properly which I noticed only when Rafa finished, so I didn't see that match. Seems they decided to bring pascal and Ramos back from dead on the same day.
