According to l'Equipe, he's out Rotterdam and Dubai. It seems that he injured himself after his match vs Nole, probably an accident. Wish him a fast recovery

Is this the only surgery Roger's ever had in his career? Ankle on crutches and bad back didn't require any operation so I reckon it might be. At least it's a quiet time of the year when there's lots of time to recover. Still sucks though. Hopefully he'll be back on track soon. Was looking forward to seeing him on the fast courts at Dubai.

I remember when some people thought it's dificult to get an injured during the practice a little before to start a match or just sitting on a chair or doing just a misstep, yes, it's possible :nono

Somehow I am not buying it. He must have done it during the Nole match.

I doubt it. If Fed was playing competitively in the first two sets and then mysteriously vanished in the last two sets, I would be suspicious. But, what happened in that match is the other way.

According to l'Equipe, he began to feel some pain when he walked in a park with kids.... it's really strange, can't buy this explanation

Me too. I love watching Roger on those Dubai courts. :( If only more courts played like that during the year...

They should have chucked Dubai off the calendar years ago when they stopped Shahar Pe'er playing, because she's Israeli. I think only Roddick put his money where his mouth was. The sport was dragged into a shameful episode and many of its top stars along with it, and Dubai should have been thrown out. I have no sympathy for them this year that Federer isn't playing there...

I completely agree with you. I just like the change of the faster hards. The ideal would be courts like in Dubai, but somewhere else entirely...

Yeah, I agree about the faster courts. There really should be part of the season where the game is played at greater speed. Even indoor courts are playing as slow as old 1980's clay. It's a bugbear of mine...

A bugbear of you, me and many, but no one seems to do anything about it. You'd think there'd be an incentive to lay down some faster courts, because variety makes things more interesting, and that's good for the game. Even Shanghai, which used to be one of the faster hards, played much slower last year. Why would they do that? It's just weird...

It's a unique test, and one we haven't seen since the glory days of Sampras, to be able to truncate the shot and improvise your game in a rat-a-tat fashion. Speedy hands, reflexes like slippy ice, nerves of steel. For the last 13 years or so, the players have more time to hit the shot, get into the rally, build a position on the court. That used to be the preserve of dirtballers, while the macho men of fast courts hurled lightning bolts at each other.

The game has gone too far in the other direction... :nono

Nicely put! Makes me think of good ole Pete back in the day, firing down fizzing serves and crisp volleys on Centre Court...

The thing is, I love the longer rallies and point construction of slower courts too, it's just nice to see both - some variety, some balance. At the moment we have - what? Dubai, Cinci, WD and the WD warm-ups. And everything else is slow to medium slow. As you say, that's an imbalance that needs to be corrected.

It virtually used to be two separate tours, whereas now it's a uniform tyranny of style. Which lead to a tyranny of the same old players. There's not a great list of fast courts and as long as the sport remains popular, there won't be much call to change, which is a pity...

It happens. I broke my elbow three years ago in the dumbest way, haha. Brian Baker's career ending injury happened without even being at a run if I remember correctly :s

I remember there was an Arsenal goalkeeper who put himself out standing up to change the channels on telly. Injuries can be random too...

I'm bumming. It's never good news when an athlete has knee surgery - just ask Tiger Woods or Nadal. At least it's the meniscus and not an ACL injury. But, given Roger's age, it could be the beginning of the end. The announcement said he'll be out for all of February, but we'll have to wait to see if that's really the case. Murray's probably breathing a sigh of relief though because he's not playing in Feb either and Roger could have taken over the #2 ranking again. Murray's got a lot more points to defend this spring than Roger does, so hanging on to #2 is still going to be an issue for him.

I find it hilarious though that the announcement was carefully worded to say that it happened THE DAY AFTER his loss to Djokovic in the semis. There's already a bunch of people trying to make excuses that it happened during the match and that's why he lost. :nono No, he got trounced for 2 sets, took it like a man, and at least made Nole work to win in it 4 sets (ahem, Andy Murray). No excuses for that loss other than getting outplayed - which he freely admitted. :lolz:

It could have happened that way. He's 34, got 4 kids and crap happens. Anybody over the age of 30 knows some days you can injure yourself just turning over in bed. And if it was the day after the match then he was probably already feeling some post-match stiffness. He's darned lucky to have had so few injuries in the last 13-14 years. Nadal can barely go 2 days without injuring himself and he's nearly 5 years younger..
