Having thought more about the match, I think this was a really big victory for Fed. He was playing far from his hard court best, against Nadal who is always in his head, and was playing near his top level.
This should give Fed more confidence if they meet again next year on a surface other than clay.

What I've read from Nadal is the he was ok after the loss, he says that it was a very positive week and close to his best level even playing on his worst surface. Now he is #6 and just to 100 points to Berdych. I didn't think it was a good idea to play those three tournaments in a row but maybe has been more positive than I thought

Fed's wins in his favorite tourneys:

Halle ----------- 8
Wimbedon ----- 7
Cincy ------ 7
Dubai ------ 7
Basel ----- 7
WTF ---- 6
USOpen --- 5

That accounts for 47 of 88 titles.

I believe Fed is the only player to have won 5 tourneys at least 7 times and also 6 toruneys at least 6 times (not sure of 7 tourneys at least 5 times).

Isn't this the case with all the great players though? They play the same tourneys over and over again, so they're bound to have 4-5 wins for each tourney. You can do the same accounting of Nadal and the clay court tourneys he's won. 9 French Opens account for 64.3% of his Slam total of 14.

French Open - 9
Monte Carlo - 8
Barcelona - 8
Rome - 7
Madrid - 4

That's 36 of his 67 titles. I'm too lazy to count up the smaller 500 and 250 tourneys, but really - they all win the same tourneys over and over again because there's a finite number of tourneys (especially Masters and 500 events) played every year. The scary thing is that Nadal is arguably considered the 2nd greatest player ever (I'd vote for Pete) - and he's only won 20 non-clay tournaments in his entire career and has never won the year-end championship.

But, Fed's repeated titles come from a variety of situations

Halle and Wimbledon -------- Grass
Cincy, Dubai and USO ------- Outdoor hard
Basel, WTF -------- Indoor hard

Although he has won Wimbledon twice, I would say that grass, not hard courts, is Nadal's worst surface, based on his results from the past 5 years.

It definitely has become his worst surface. Obviously, pre-2012, it's a different story.

Yep, it's very incomprehensible that after to win two Wimbledon titles, 2008 and 2010 (he didn't play 2011 due to his knee injury) has played so bad on grass later losing against anyone :nono  :(

Actually he lost to Novak in the finals in 2011.

I'll have to go look it up, but I do believe Nadal attended 2009, but lost all 3 of his RR matches; including another one to Robin Soderling! OTTH! :p :eyepop  :dodgy:

You don't have to look anything up, you just need to look up ^^

Fedal 34 brings these two boys level with Sampras-Agassi in the Open era rivalries, in terms of number of matches played...

I've been finding these rivalries more incredible and fascinating all the time! In the old days, there were more upsets so we were lucky to get 14 matches between Borg and McEnroe! Again, this proves my point that today's players have all kinds of ability, but are still gutless and can't finish off top players to break up "the party!" The Big 4 aren't even done and they have more matches between them than in any other era; including Rosewall and Laver which was touted as "The RIVALRY" for years! After all is said and done, no rivalry will ever come close to Navratilova and Evert; 80 matches in favor of Martina at 43-37! :eyepop :p :nono  :dodgy:
