Roger has confirmed that he will be playing in Montreal.
I know you're not especially happy about this, but he does have the option to look at the draw and bail early, if it suits. I don't think any of us kids ourselves that sometimes the big guys figure out an exit strategy, when it benefits them.

I have no complaints. He knows his physical level better than any of us. After all he played only one match in Stuttgart. Later in both Halley and Wimby, he won the tourneys without losing a set. So, perhaps he feels fresh and so the move.

I still think that Fed will take it easy, until he reaches SF. Meaning, if he had to fight way too hard to win a match in the early rounds, he will do a "Tomic" and get out. But, if he does reach SF, from then on he will do a 'Rafa" and fight hard to win every point and the title. The one positive point in this move is that he might win a new title for the first time. He has never won in Montreal before (even though he has won twice in Toronto).

I agree that he'll take it easy to start. He'll see the draw, figure his chances, and bow out gracefully if it's not worth the effort. However, if it starts to get tight up there above the tree-line, and Rafa is still in his sights, he might just be game to get another win over him. I don't think it would be terrible for Roger if Rafa beat him again, but it would be rough on Rafa if Fed got him for a 4th time this year.

If Andy drops out, Fedal cannot happen before finals. Otherwise, there is a 50% chance that Fedal may be scheduled (not necessarily materialize) for SF. Independent of when it happens, Fedal match will obviously taken seriously by both parties.

I don't think there is ever a match they played each other that hasn't been or won't be taken very seriously by both of them, possibly excepting Roger in their first meeting. (And that's just a guess.) They both know that when they play it generates huge interest, and both have said they enjoy the electricity, and have said they enjoy playing each other. It's not lost on them that they are one of the greatest rivalries in sports. They'll take it seriously.

IMO Cincy as preparation for USO is overrated. The only Cincy champion in a decade to win USO is Rafa who is a big momentum player. Roger won Cincy thrice without making finals at USO. He bagelled Novak in the Cincy final and got schooled in the quarters by Birdman in 2012. Novak hasn't ever won Cincy but has been the most consistently high quality player of the big 4 at Flushing. All those may be a statistical oddities but I think Cincy takes away much needed concentration reserves needed for making it to and winning the final weekend of the Open. USO is a chaotic experience for the players. Remember reading somewhere that Borg found it hard to focus on his tennis at USO and that's why never won it. There's a party going on in the raucous Arthur Ashe stands while the players are trying to play tennis. A mere 'Thank You' from the umpire doesn't silence the crowd. The press is less disciplined too I think. Sustained focus may be critical at USO because of that chaos. The tour as a whole is best on hards and lapses of concentration tend to get punished more severely there. Mercifully, they moved the final to Monday but that doesn't change the rest.

As to Novak, it must be the meditation.

Amazing stat: Roger is 25-0 in big tournament matches this year - meaning, he is undefeated in all big tournaments so far. I know we all know this, but I hadn't quite thought of it that way before. He's only played four out of a possible eight so far, but still.

This year Roger has dominated hard and grass to a very high extent. Just like 04-07. Well, this is bound to stop somewhere but I hope he goes on.

I'm really glad he's playing Canada because the benefits--getting to see more Roger and keeping pace in the race rankings--far outweigh the slim chances it negatively impacts the USO.

In addition to the USO and #1, I'm wondering if Roger has a 10 title season in the back of his mind. Slim chance but possible.

So Roger plays, Stan is skipping both Canada and Cincy.

I just saw that Stan is out. Makes sense because he only has 450 points to defend between the 2 tournaments - but a whopping 2,000 to defend at the US Open. Since Djokovic is out he knows he'll be at least the #4 the USO if Cilic doesn't suddenly go on a tear and win 2 Masters 1,000 events in a row. Cilic has 1,000 to defend in Cincy and the only way he could pass Stan for the #4 seed is to either defend his title at Cincy or win Toronto and make it to at least the semis in Cincy. And I think we all know that's a long shot.

Happy Birthday Roger!

Your age< 2 * Your Major Count and you are the only player satisfying that equation.

Rafa maybe was 28 then or close to it. Sampras I believe was just under 30 when he won his last one.

With Murray out of Montreal and Cincinnati will Rafa and Fed be #1 & #2 even if he decides to play the US Open? I"m sure of Nadal but what would Fed have to do guarantee #2 at the Open?
