Sometimes taking a break from "work" is very mentally therapeutic for many athletes. Michael Jordan's day off he would fly to Vegas or Atlantic City to the casinos even during the championships series games.

It takes a lot of commitments to hit a lot of balls to be successful on clay. The typical combinations that work do effectively on the faster surfaces does not hold true on the dirt.

This is why Rafa's and Chris Everts clay court records are NEVER going to be surpassed. IMO
Agree with your comments about taking some time off between tournaments,Osaka was very empathic that one of hr prime goals this year was to get better on clay, win a title maybe, clay is soo taxing mentally and physically,it is a surface that does require you to practice and as you say hit a lot of balls.

Coco wasted Wang in the first set, 6-1. She's looking great.

Gauff won, 1 and 3. Amazing performance. She's looking rock-solid. Wang didn't play poorly at all...Coco was just too good. Is it too soon to put her on the short list of favorites for RG? She gets NCH #25 ranking with this win.

Gauff wins the doubles with Caty McNally to join No1 Ash Barty (Stuggart) as the only player to win singles and doubles at a event this year.17 year old Gauff is the youngest player to sweep since Maria Sharapova in 2004 Birmingham.

I would not put Coco on the short list of favs for RG I would put her as a dangerous floater,GS are a big step up from a WTA 250 event.

Venus Williams is on the player's list in Strasburg,France which begins May 24-May30th.No sighting of Serena, which I thought might be the case.Bianca Andreescu who has recovered from COVID,after she had to withdraw from Madrid,Rome is playing in Strasburg.

Fair enough. I was a bit swept away by how imperious she is looking atm. But 7 matches against ALL of the competition, and she's 17.

The clay helps Coco with her all round game, especially defense wise, which you need on clay for starters, remember that Spainish male player, who can play on clay a bit:) his defense is outstanding.....yes she is 17 years old,her overall game is progressing well. Also I have to make mention of her parents, who are not 'tennis parents' thank goodness,it was nice to see Coco run to give her dad a big hug after she won the match.

Agreed that I think her parents are an asset, rather than a detriment to her. I saw that hug. I also love when her "game face" changes into her girlish happy face. She is moving well in the right direction. I don't mean to push it. Dangerous floater, indeed. Let me just say that I think she has a great chance to make the 2nd week.

A Dangerous floater that could make the 2nd week lets see the draw first and she will be seeded which is a good thing, lets not get too carried away with her win, it was a WTA 250 tournament, there are still things in her game that needs attention, she is progressing well.

Thank you! People are ready to pass the baton off to this kid who like other players, allow them to extend her unnecessarily thru terrible UFE's! How do people forget when up 5-1 the set was extended taking her to a TB, then needed a 3rd set! Some say she is being protected, but it seems like I'm seeing her every tournament, every week, not only playing singles, but winning in doubles! As I warned, "burnout" is so inevitable IMO over being the next top player! :astonished-face:

Coco is talented I am the first to admit that when she started on the tour, though I am not a person to declare she will be the 'next best player on the WTA tour'.I will take the 'lets wait and see approach'.The WTA has soo much depth at the present time, which is a good thing.,any given day a top seed can be defeated if they do not show up to play.As you are aware the WTA has put in place restrictions on playing for a 17 year old, which I think is a good thing.
