Only 9 players have a puncher's chance at AO title as per odds checker ( a chance of 2% or more) on 1st January 2017 after the A(budhabi Exo) tourney. Here they are listed in order.

1. Sir 13/8
2. Djoker 7/4
3. Man 12
4. Beast 20
5. Goat 20
6. Missile 20
7. Samurai 25
8. Bad Boy 40
9. Cough Drop 50

Let us say how this changes after BCD tourneys of the first week and then after the draw comes out.

Cough Drop? :laydownlaughing And to think I was told NOT to refer to Nadal as "Butt-digging Boy" in my comments here...

It's hard to believe it's almost upon us. This might be a huge momentum shifting slam, especially if Murray can rubberstamp his top spot by taking the title. He's been close so often, but can he get over the hump? The difference mentally between Murray/Lendl and Murray/Dishwasher is very noticeable. He was bound to be tired going into the ATP final, but he dispatched Djoker very routinely there.

Novak has dumped the flab from his own team, and it'll be interesting to see how he gets on. Can he shrug off the six-month slump he's been in? I never bought the kool-aid that suggests Novak is some bullet-proof tough automaton whose mentally the strongest thing there's ever been. He isn't. In fact, he's lost many big matches because he's been the opposite to mentally tough. When he's clear-minded and focused and cocky, he's tough. But will he be able to get that back in time?

Missile at 20 looks good odds, whereas Stan at 12 looks generous. Stan ain't winning this one. First slam in a while there's no redhot favourite, maybe. Should be a good one...

Roger actually at no.4 along with those two. And, that is after being away from the tour for 5 months. Not bad.

Missile is Cilic, right?

I think the odds on Roger are very generous too. And if Nick is Bad Boy, I think 40 is being kind.

Missiles is Milos - Cilic is Cough Drop...

It only shows how much people still believe in Roger.

Fed will be seeded somewhere between 17 and 24 at AO. As such he will be facing a player seeded somewhere between 9 and 16 in 3rd round. Hence, Fed cannot possibly play Sir Andy or Nole in 3rd round. However, he can possible play Rafa in 3rd round as Rafa is likely to be seeded #9 (except in the unlikely event of some withdrawals).

Then in that case, Roger will have a sleepless night with the prospect of facing this hopefully rejuvenated version of the Spanish Bull.

Roger-Rafa rivalry is still alive. Great!

Both have to make it to their respective rounds to keep a so called rivalry alive; 1 or both have been upset of late! :cover

If Federer and Nadal end up in the same quarter, only then will we have a chance of having a Fedal match at some point. Otherwise, it's difficult.

It just has not been happening; more sure of Nole playing Roger! Their record remains close even though Nole's taken most of their matches; esp. in the majors in the last couple years! :clap :popcorn :p

They could potentially meet in the third round at AO. Due to sagging rankings, they will be expected to meet earlier in the future. The funny thing about potential meeting in earlier rounds is that it has better chance of actually happening as they have fewer hurdles to get there. So, we might see a whole lot of modern pre-quarterfinal Fedal matches from now on. It will be interesting to see whether a dilapidated Fed can beat banged-up Rafa. :puzzled

They had a rivalry? :snicker

It's been a "pretend" rivalry for years; even though they haven't met in ages! It also doesn't seem to matter how slanted the H2H match count has been all this time! It's a joke! :puzzled :nono  :cover

It might not be a rivalry at the moment but it once was. For a long time, Federer was great on the fast courts and was the reigning world no. 1 while his best competitor would challenge him on those surfaces at times as the lone challenger besides winning everything on clay. Two top players competed for the top ranking closely for almost 5 years or so. Each had their own path that they chose to get to the top of world ranking before Roger really lost his best game in mid-2010. Everytime when these two met, there was a lot of emotions and a lot of tactics at the same time. It was a great rivalry, mate. The H2H does no justice to their rivalry in reality. Rafa was clearly always better on clay. But, he was not good enough to make many finals on hard and grass courts when Roger was still pretty good. It's not your usual rivalry. It' unique.

It's not really a rivalry, buddy. Roger has basically been picking over scraps of leftovers since 2007...

Here are the latest odds after the BCD (Brisbane/Chennai/Doha) tourneys are over.

1. Joker 13/8
2. Sir 7/4
3. Man 14
4. Beast 14
5. Missile 20
6. Goat 22
7. Samurai 30
8. Bad Boy 50
9. Baby 66
10. Cough Drop 66
11. Thiem 80

Zverev, Tsonga and Berdych are given 1% chance and all the rest have less than 1 percentage chance to win AO. Important changes from a week ago are the following:

1. Andy and Nole have interchanged their close odds with Nole now becoming favorite.
2. Stan's odds have slightly worsened from 12 to 14.
3. Before, Fed, Rafa and Milos were tied at 20. Now, Rafa has become leader of pack,
Fed is trailing and Milos is in between them.
4. The odds of Samurai, Bad Boy and Cough Drop have taken some, but not heavy, hit.
