RE: DAVENPORT---Hingis Returns To Singles In Fall Vowing To Halt Serena's Dominance

I think the thing is you have to see yourself contending for the titles. Martina Hingis knows she can contend for doubles titles with the right partner. I think she knows realistically that she isn't going to contend for the big titles in singles having to wade through the top 3 isn't that easy. I don't think we will have a fortunate circumstance for someone where all of the top 3 is MIA like Wimbledon this year anytime soon. Serena especially takes losses like that to heart and tries to right that ship quickly and get back on track.

Martina is 32, Aggie is 24 with fresher legs.

However successful she is, it'll be nice to see her again. Just to add someone interesting to the mix.

Agreed. I always liked Hingis' game. Even if she's not competitive it will bring some novelty value.

This is a hall of famer we are talking about. right?
Not just anyone!

I wonder how many players have gotten into the Hall of Fame and come back? Probably some to doubles, but singles?

Navratilova did it, if I remember correctly. She played singles in the French and Wimbledon one year. I remember coz Amelie Mauresmo was pissed that she got a WC into the French Open instead of them giving it to a French youngin.

Only top women can get away with extended absences only to come back in 5 or 6 years! The men would eat them alive! Players like Sampras, Courier, and Edberg couldn't possibly get away with that kind of plan! Just shows how far the women are behind the men in strength, talent, and the like! How embarrassing to lose to anyone who's been gone off the tour for 5+ years!:p  :D

Such old news! Will it never stop? A new record needs to be played!

There's no longer any physical difference between 24 and 32. If age still mattered as it once did, teenagers would be ruling the roost and they're not.

What's prompting this comeback: boredom, hunger, money (alimony) or (Venus) envy?

No other life skills!! :nono I can't wait to see her get slammed and embarrassed!! Third round should be her best results!!

The problem is, she "retired" so young and there is that, "what do I do know" factor. She can only do so much horseback riding and legends tennis is an occasional thing and can get boring real quick.

But, I can see her making the quarters here and there, but, don't see her beating Serena, Vika, Maria or Aggie.

I think age is still a factor in these things. I think with exceptional athletes like Martina N and Serena age isn't a factor, but if you aren't a particularly gifted athlete and/or built a strong championship foundation like Serena and Martina N age can prove to be a difference. It is easier to be 30+ and still win slams and not feel your age than to be 30+ with no major wins to your name and not have it have a mental and physical effect.

None of those old ladies on WTT are able to handle the court smarts of Hingis! No wonder she thinks she can make a comeback! I can't wait! :clap :p :clap

I think it's possible! When Henin returned, she was #13 within months! Depending on the draws, I can see her there by next spring; easily! The women's game isn't that deep!

Last year during WTT, didn't Martina say she was only good for one set of tennis, and after that it felt as if she'd have a heart attack?!? Yes she did, and now she's a year older. I don't think she can go four rounds, with the competition getting stronger and faster each round. Give it up!!

But she now admits she's been planning her comeback for five years. As I've stated. she just wanted to plot her comeback under the radar of all, including the doping controllers. Can I blame her 100%? No, for I wouldn't want to be handed a cup and ordered into the nearest lavatory anywhere and everywhere I go. Plus, I'm sure she's been doing coke all along, not to mention other 'stuff.' Her ex-husband has confirmed she's a two-faced cheater who can never be trusted.

I can see her competing in doubles, but no way in singles. I guess she needs something to do

Really??

But who is Dementia?!? :D LOL!! j/k

Vaidisova's retirement was premature so I look forward to her comeback, but Elena seemed just about done. I hope she improved that serve, lol. We'll see .. If Caro can remain in the top ten, it's up for grabs.

On a related note, I would imagine that a lot of the girls playing into their 30's have already wisely frozen some eggs for future pregnancies. I know I would. I bet the WS have too.
