I wouldn't bet against Hingis making the top 30! The women's game isn't that tough to crack! Serena was allowed to come and go with impunity and still reigns as #1 after all this time! That's not saying much for their games collectively!

Don't minimize Serena's talents to make your point regarding the WTA. Serena is a very special player, more so than Hingis ever was. It will be difficult for her to make the top 20, this isn't 10 years ago.

Yeah but I can't see her contending for singles titles without a serve. Sure Errani does well with what she has, but the serve keeps her from the big titles.
I agree, but it keeps her in the top 5-10 range. That's remarkable for someone with a 70mph serve. Hingis has better guile and anticipation and can surpass Errani in ranking.

Having Hingis back will get me to watch more women's tennis! Right now it's hit or miss! I can do without all the screeching, groaning, and other outrageous noises coming out of these women! It's gross in so many ways and totally unwatchable at times!

What's prompting this comeback: boredom, hunger, money (alimony) or (Venus) envy?

I read somewhere that she's broke, but somehow I do not believe that.

I think it's a number of things.
First of all it's Serena, if a 31 year old Serena can do it why can't the 32 year old Martina?
Second is her sudden return to Tennis in a big way, she was coaching Palvy and sitting in WTA matches all the time, then it was Venus' injury and absence from WTT and Martina being Venus' replacement in Washington Kastles pro tennis team.

She is already back folks, look at her here:

The reason why Serena Williams can leave and rejoin tennis at her own leisure and STILL dominate, is because she is light years ahead and much better than the rest. She stands alone!

it has nothing to do with the WTA being weak or strong. so stop trying to attack the WTA as you've done for years simply because 40 year old tennis players have retired. In that case, lets talk about the ATP being weak with it same repetitive players winning slams only.

anyways, Martina Hingis can come back. i Hope she enjoys her short visit back to the WTA. i also hope she is drug free.

I think she has that sensation people get when they feel that they have unfinished business to take care of and they need to prove something if only to themselves. If she come back, good for her and good for tennis.

However successful she is, it'll be nice to see her again. Just to add someone interesting to the mix.

Didn't they find cocaine in her system during a drug test. I thought she retired instead of taking a suspension. If that is the case the WTA should make her serve out her suspension before she is allowed to play.

Not old news, just the truth! She tested positive for illegal drugs. She should serve her suspension like everybody else. It appears she retired to avoid the suspension

Agreed. I always liked Hingis' game. Even if she's not competitive it will bring some novelty value.

I wonder how many players have gotten into the Hall of Fame and come back? Probably some to doubles, but singles?

In my lifetime, it's happened only 3 times; Billie Jean King, Martina Navratilova, now Martina Hingis! It made sense for Hingis to wait so now she won't have to wait another few years for induction! Smart girl and still able to compete; esp. in doubles! So far only Navratilova has won any majors after induction; in the pro era anyway! Haven't checked pre-Open era records!

Navratilova did it, if I remember correctly. She played singles in the French and Wimbledon one year. I remember coz Amelie Mauresmo was pissed that she got a WC into the French Open instead of them giving it to a French youngin.

Only top women can get away with extended absences only to come back in 5 or 6 years! The men would eat them alive! Players like Sampras, Courier, and Edberg couldn't possibly get away with that kind of plan! Just shows how far the women are behind the men in strength, talent, and the like! How embarrassing to lose to anyone who's been gone off the tour for 5+ years!:p  :D

Radwanska outplaying the more powerful Jamie Hampton at Bank Of The West semi! If Aggie can do it, Martina can do it! I can't wait!

On the Cibby vs Sorana match, Hingis was on the phone with the casters. She pretty much said no to singles ... haha but we'll see. I hope she finds it in herself to try for a last hurrah
