I think you guys are a year away from making some serious noise, but will be one of the surprise teams this year. Malzahn hiring Ellis Johnson was huge. Great class you brought in that will likely pay off big-time dividends next year IMO :)

I'm a Lamecock. ALOT of pressure on us this year to win the East and we finally avoid Bama and/or LSU like UGA has had for the past few years(reg season). UGA game is always critical but we face three straight SEC roadies(thanks Slive!) that is just as important. Clemson is by far our biggest rival. Not on the scale of Bama/Auburn(IMO the biggest traditional rival in college football), but I can assure you the hatred/intensity is up there as well.

Like everyone, looking forward to the season and will be in the stands when we open up college football against the Heels Thursday at 6. ;)

Go Cocks! I lived in Charleston for a long time and adopted the gamecocks as my second favorite SEC team. Spurrier has become much more likeable there.

What do you think your guys chances are of getting a championship at some point? All of SC's teams, even the great ones, have seemed to be missing that one more good player that could take them to the next level (Auburn often has the same problem). You guys have come so far in the last ten years that I predict they will get one eventually. I don't know how alabama has had such amazing teams every year now for like 5 years in a row. Their talent depth is insane.

In all honesty, a good season for auburn this year would be 8-5 or so. 10 wins would be incredible. We are in the process of rebuilding. I do believe Malzahn can be a great coach for us. I was hoping he would get the job. Plus the talent we have was recruited for his offense.

The West got unlucky with getting to have play another super team in A&M. Everybody thought Missouri would be the dangerous addition to the conference.

Oh, Jeepers...we have two Gamecocks?! That seems over-balanced. I haven't looked at the year options yet, but I will say that I'm Texas Longhorns, as Fedfan well knows, so "Hook 'em Horns!" Actually, I'm not at all an NFL girl, but I do love college football. I'll be happy to keep a college football thread alive. I definitely have favorites, and most-hateds. :p

Can we all agree to dislike Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida (sorry Britbox)?

Small world Riotbeard, I moved from Mt Pleasant about 4 years ago! Who knows we may have run in to each other. Thanks for the kind words about USC( we need to remind britbox that down south USC is South Carolina :) ). Always good to have some support as we have lived in mediocrity for so many decades, more accurately like a century and are just starting to field some decent teams. And yes, it's all because of Spurrier.

As far as our chances of getting a NC, keep in mind in our 100+ year history and I'm sure you're already aware, we've never finished in the top 10 until these past two years. You look up the word "mediocrity" in websters and you'll see a pic of a Gamecock attached. I'll be thrilled if we make it to Atlanta and that is the goal this year. Anything else is considered, realistically a bonus. I'm also aware that Spurrier in all likelihood will probably hang it up in two or three years. He's not the kind of guy to hang around way past his time like Bowden or Paterno. He's always said he wont be coaching in his 70s and is 67. I think this "potentially" could be his best team in Columbia, but we have to replace our entire two deep at LB and reports coming out of camp is this team is lacking the leadership the previous two had. If we go 10-2 again in the reg season, as long as hopefully one of the W's is against Clemson, I'll be content.

I think you guys will always be offensively explosive under Malzahn and with Johnson being one of the better DCs in the bizz and the players Auburn traditionally attracts(you guys typically recruit very well)....I think it's simply a matter of time before you guys are back to typical big-time Auburn football. And speaking of recruiting, yes you have some good offensive talent and you know Gus will maximize it, but also last year's DL haul headed by consensus 5* studs in Adams and Lawson(I'm assuming both qualified?) was considered by most analysts as the best DL class in the land. IMO, defense wins championships and it all starts up front. (Then again you guys were the exception with Cam in 2010, but you had probably the best defensive player in college football in Fairley as well and it showed against the Ducks.)

As far as TAMU...I don't know how they will fair this year with the circus distraction surrounding Manziel. The guy has a target on his back the size of Texas and all brought on by his antics. Still, a very dangerous squad though.

If you're pass through Columbia, give me a heads up and we'll meet for a cold one or two!

Sorry RB, I like Nick Saban, but will stand beside you against Ohio State.

I've bled Penn State blue and white since my great grandfather met my great grandmother there in the late 1800's. :) Coach O'Brien did real well his first year and hopefully will be able to safely navigate the difficult waters of the next three years.

edit: And Penn State pulls out the win against Syracuse 23-17. Freshman QB Hackenberg did pretty well.

Wisconsin Badgers here. Not that big of a college football fan but will catch a few games here and there. Teams I hate: Michigan, Ohio State, and Notre Dame.

So much for the East!

Fingers crossed we aren't down in the dumps for a capable Vandy team after the loss in Athens.(yes, I was there and sat in the Dawg section :( )

Big game in college station this week.

While the Aggies are an arch rival, I have to pull for them over 'Bama. Never discount the 12th Man in College Station. Those folks are committed, and they don't sit down. (Truth is, I love too many Aggies in my life to root against them, as long as they're not playing UT.)

Tomorrow will be telling for auburn. We have our first Sec game against Mississippi state. Not a great team but it is a more true measuring stick. As much as I don't care for manziel, I am of course routing for the aggies over bama!

The East again is interesting with three solid teams (although I doubt florida is as good as their ranking. UGA has a GREAT offense, and USC a great defense. Either of those teams have a chance to win the SEC championship (or for all purpose, the national championship).

Hey Mox, what's the word on Texas?

More general question, when will the Sec streak end, and when will Sec dominance end (I think these are different questions)?

Actually we have serious question marks on defense stemming from youth and lack of leadership. It's early and I'm hoping we mature in a hurry.

As far as Texas, I think Mack Brown has figured a very good team. Should be top 10. I will never understand, however, a re-figuring of the groupings that ends a classic rivalry like Texas/Texas A&M.

Too bad, Nebraska lost to UCLA after leading by 18 points in front of
a home crowd of 91,000 people. Now, they will be kicked out of top 25
when the new poll comes out tomorrow. Hope, they can come back up.

I saw the highlights only, but that has to be gratifying!

War Eagle! And speaking of, that is such a cool thing. Saw it once in person and then saw Cam break our hearts as he did everyone that year. Not just saying this because I'm addressing you, but I was really impressed with your fans. I sat in your section that night and they were extremely hospitable. I've been to most of the big SEC venues from Bryant Denny, to Neyland, to Sanford, to the Swamp, to both Death Valleys(I'm including Clemson with LSU as they have an SEC-like setting), to Auburn's Jordan-Hare and would rate your fans the classiest of the bunch!

Based purely on my experiences only, this is how I'd rate the fans of previous mentioned venues from best to worst...

1. Auburn
2. Tennessee
3. Alabama
4. Clemson
5. Florida
6. LSU
7. UGA(even Clemson fans would agree with me on this one)

Loudest of those stadiums(and I'll add ours), again just one man's opinion...

1. LSU(at night)
2. UF
3. Tennessee
4. Auburn
5. South Carolina
6. Georgia
7. Clemson
8. Bama(probably because DuBose was going 3-8 the year I went, obviously different these days)

Hell, while I'm at it, hottest chicks....

1. UGA
2. UF
3. Bama
4. LSU
5. Clemson
6. South Carolina
7. Auburn(albeit didn't look much as I was with one possessive chick!)
8. Tennessee

Anyway, pulling for you guys against those Cajuns!

We have an off week.
