Former world's no.1 Roger Federer thinks while he was oozing with potential in the early years of his tennis career he wasn't as prodigious as fellow tennis players Rafael Nadal, Martina Hingis and pro golfer Tiger Woods.

Tennis Magazine had an opportunity to interview Federer, who is currently training hard after suffering a knee injury a month ago.

According to the 34-year Swiss, he was already aware of enormous talent in him since the early phase of his pro career, though he wasn't able to convert it into positive results right away. Unlike Hingis and Nadal, who both easily breezed through the competition at an early age, Federer waited at least half a decade to win his first Grand Slam in 2003.

About Federer´s serve: Yes, his serve is more involved in his success than in the rest of the big 3 +1 case, basically because he serves better than them. The problem is not the argument in itself, it is what people jump to conclude right after it. "Oh, then he only wins due to his serve". Nadal has more physical strength than the rest of the big 3 +1, and physical strength is more involved in his success than in the other guys cases. But surely physical strength is not his main driver for success (I can think of handful of more important reasons, the first one is talent).

And -- little hair splitting here: Big server is different than good server. The big guys in general are good servers too, but still their serves are based on power (and height). Federer's serve is a reflection of his technical skills: It has power, but it has placement and variety, and it is extremely clutch on big moments. In other words, he serves well because he is an extremely good player, not the other way around.

I agree with this. I would just add that it's less about Roger's serve on it's own. That's what the servebots do. With Roger, he's able to set up serve combinations that end with easy winners. It's not just aces and unreturnables

Grigor can be affected by nerves, is prone to choking, but he ain't no pu$$y, and he is more talented than Nick, it has to be said. I think people overrate Nick's mentality, stating that he is a big match player while having reached his first masters final today, at 22.
Both are talented, but Dimitrov is a league above.
I hope this win will inspire him rather than hamper him, as in satisfying his thirst for a big win and then he never wins anything big in his life.

So do I. He has a lovely game to watch. Don't really understand why it hasn't happened for him, I think the loss to Nadal AO had a bad effect on him.

Sometimes I think Kyrgios is like a better version of Monfils. Great power and athleticism but with a bizarre mentality where he just plays mostly rally balls. I'm not saying he should crush the ball all the time, but he just loops everything in. I'll grant him that he hits a good length but it would be frightening if the guy upped his average rally speed. Not sure anyone would be able to live with him

I don't think he loss to Nadal had a bad affect on him at all but he always seems not to be too stable. By the way he was practicing with Rafa in Mallorca between Wimbledon and Montreal and it seems that he has got more improvement than Rafa lol
