Sweet way to win it. Well done, Cilic. Hard to imagine he won a slam before a masters 1000 but there you go.

How many body parts will Murray clutch today? :nono

Get over Murray winning brill tennis:p:plot

Seems he's gone "gluten free" as he never ever gets tired. :popcorn

That must be it! - I hope this puts the kibosh on Murray taking over #1! He needed this since he went to Cincy! Should have skipped it like other top players! This might cost him when it gets to be "the crunch" in Flushing! :cover :ras:

Doubt it'll cost him when he never gets tired lately. He has plenty of time now before the US Open to recharge as does Cilic.

Maybe; sometimes that's the case, but the grind of the tour, the travel, and expectations can change that consensus! Another site's going a bit overboard in support of Murray like he's really gotten over some hump and will challenge Nole seriously for #1! IMO, it would take a monumental collapse to see any change in the rankings anytime soon! :dodgy:

He was always able to beat the guys he's beating now so there's nothing unexpected happening really. Cilic has always been a choker but not today and he blew it big time against Murray in the 2012 USO 1/4 final when ahead 6-3 5-1. He was destroying him and then his game went to pieces and he only won another 2 games. That shows how pathetic he has often been but hopefully he can make things interesting now for the future. The biggest change noticeable in Murray is he never gets tired. In a week when all the other players who went far at the Olympic were exhausted or well below bar or simply not playing, he's still making finals here running around like the Duracell bunny. There shouldn't be any fatigue really for either him or Cilic. If Murray beats an in form Novak then fair enough, he's over the hump but Novak's been shocking by his standards for the last few months anyway.

All of a sudden Cilic is now a factor at the US Open. I'd probably rank him ahead of everyone but Novak and Andy, in a second group that includes Rafa and Stan, and ahead of players like Milos, Kei, Tsonga, Berdych, etc. He's a bit of a "baby Stan" in that when he's on, he's very very hard to beat.

I haven't seen the match but I'm not surprised with the result because I was more surprised that Muzz still was "alive" but I'm sure the fatigue got him at the end, he had done more than enough
Anyway....yesterday he went a little bit too far but he was lucky that the ball didn't hit the Umpire...

I agree, El Dude. You could even say that he is Stan Wawrinka on fast courts. He is definitely the 3rd favorite after Novak and Andy.

Very nice by Marin. After two years, there is a new Master winner on tour other than the usual suspects.
He was down in the match with Grigor up a break and with a BP for a two breaks up, but he was able to hang tough and turn it around.
Wawrinka also won the master after he won his first slam, so this is not unprecented.
He jumps to #9 ranking, sending Tsonga out of the top 10.

And we are starting again......every time that a player beats one of the top players then he automaticly become a candidate to win more and more MS and GS too......very repetive story.
Cilic won once the USO and I remember to hear that he will be the #1 soon (and Delpo too)
Cilic has beaten Dimitrov (since when this last one is playing well?) and Muzz who surprisingly still was stand up after a hard work, Wimbledon Champion, traveling to Rio, winning the GM, traveling to Cincinnati and reaching the final.....come on, I don't really need to watch that match, I can imagine why Cilic has won

I did not get a chance to watch the finals. Can someone who watched the match let me know as to whether this is like Novak's loss in Rome, a red herring basically, as the top dog did not feel like trying too hard to win it or a legitimate win by Cilic against a fighting and wanting murray. Thanks.

I only surfed by periodically, but Cilic was playing "all out" and served well! I thought Andy was trying hard enough! I think it just finally caught up with him! He's not in the same position as the other elite players! They reached the top and Murray hasn't had as much as a sniff until now! His run back in '12 & '13 only made him 3rd at best with Federer finishing his last reign Nole playing possum, and Nadal coming back to overtake Nole the following season! Andy can't be that magnanimous as forfeiting any Masters at this point in his career! If he went there in the 1st place, he should have been looking to cash in without Nole or Roger, & an exhausted Rafa in the draw! :nono  :cover

Well you're wrong 'cos Murray was not tired and does not get tired lately. He was just outplayed. He was running down balls like the energizer bunny as always. Cilic's firepower was just too much yesterday. He should've beaten the top players many times but has choked at the big moments but yesterday he didn't. There was one point in particular where Murray ran down a drop shot from quite some distance and flicked a cross court winner so there's no way he was fatigued in any way.

I got Cilic to win the USO at 50/1 a few days ago. Unbelievable value

I respectfully disagree. While a player with great ability, Cilic has shown himself to be rather inconsistent- a month ago he lost to Jack Sock, for instance.

This win gets Cilic to 9th in the world. I.e. if the USO draw plays out the way it "should", he has to win 3 matches (QF, SF, F) against a player ranked higher than him. Assigning him a probability of 0.25 to win each of those- which is too low against some of the top 8, too high against others, but I think about right overall- three successive wins yields 48/1 odds just accounting for the final three rounds. I'd say a line of 50/1 is pretty fair, given the chance for him to drop an early round match as well.

^ Absolutely. Just unfortunately it doesn't happen often that Cilic hits his peak form. His offensive power can blow anyone off the court though. When he serves well and hits that forehand well, he's deadly. Additionally, his 2 handed backhand can be deadly too, a prime example being the unreal winning point/match point. Pure class.

peak Cilic > peak Murray

That's a very daring declaration. By "peak Cilic", do you mean two great performances over the last 8 years? Because strictly speaking, Cilic had a great USO in 2014, and now this.

And nothing else.

And his "peak" hasn't extended through all points in between.

Whereas Andy has a much greater pedigree and has proven himself at the highest levels so often, without anybody ever getting the sniffy suspicion that his success were mere flashes in the pan...
