Shak's rating is in free fall. What a nightmare tournament Wijk has been for him. It brings to mind what seems to be happening to these guys who become 2800. MVL, Shak, So... they seem to plummet shortly after. Let's see if he's the real deal like Fabi and bounces back

In light of Kramnik's retirement his play at Wijk Aan Zee is more understandable now. He was some player. At his best his chess could only be described as... powerful. He'll still play some rapid and blitz apparently but he was never exceptional at those time controls

Wow, pretty shocked to hear that. One hell of a player at his best. I also find it so impressive that he kind of reinvented his style to play much more aggressive as he aged. And yes his chess at the peak of his powers was incredible. The only knock against him is he didn't stay at that level for too long.

that's very true. That's why any comparison versus Vishy will always go against him. Super player though, and I agree, his recent incarnation as an aggressive player was something to see

I think he and Anand are fairly even legacy wise. They were champions for similar amount of time, Anand did beat him in a WC match while Kramnik maybe gets an extra boost from beating Kasparov. I would imagine Anand has been the better tournament player and he is still around but I think it's clear he won't be making any more big waves going forward. Maybe give him a slight edge in rank over Kramnik.

Kind of surprising what you can find when you look up the guys you play online:

https://en.chessbase.com/post/nigalidze-stripped-of-gm-title-receives-3-year-ban

I kind of remember hearing about this but it probably didn't register that it was a GM caught cheating. I think it should be a lifetime ban with all titles stripped personally. Who knows how long he was doing it. I went 2-1 against him, he didn't exactly play like a grandmaster

@Federberg I know you mentioned you don't play much anymore but was wondering if you've heard of puzzle rush on chess.com?

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.chess.com/amp/article/are-you-addicted-to-puzzle-rush

I've become somewhat addicted to it, and the few friends I have that play are now pissed off I mentioned it to them as they are addicted too. It's really fun and quite honestly a great training tool as most tactic puzzles are "solve at your own leisure" while this forces quick calculation. That and comparatively you see so many puzzles it helps with pattern recognition as well.

yes I've seen it. Tried it once and really liked it. Haven't really gone on in it properly though. I will soon. Glad you reminded me

Thought this was a really interesting insight from Sam Shankland about Magnus from an interview he did on chess24

How does Carlsen’s genius manifest itself?

If I knew what made Magnus the genius he is today maybe I would be the World Champion instead of him. He just has this way of looking at the board and he just knows what moves are most critical – not necessarily what moves are best, but what moves are most critical. He’s got this sort of Fischeresque thing when you look at him play. I saw some statistic that of the top 10 players in the world he matches the top choice of the computer the least of all of them… and he matches the top three the most, which essentially means that Magnus might not play the best move any more often than anyone else, but he always plays a good move, and just this lack of serious mistakes, because his natural feel is so great… Again, he’s so much better than me that it’s really hard to comment on it. Even at number 24 in the world there’s so much difference between the two of us. It’s hard for me to truly understand what goes on in his mind, because he’s just so much stronger.

US Championships have started. Fabi draws his first two matches. Amazing to think he's 50 rating points higher than 2nd ranked So. He's bleeding rating points fast...

Jeepers! Magnus is absolutely crushing it in Shamkir. He's +4 with one round to go

Very strong stuff. I really liked the game against Giri yesterday. Looks like he crushed Karjakin today too and already clinched the tournament.
