Fed has said he might not play in Montreal this summer. He is
keeping his fingers crossed hoping back improves.

No, He did not. But, the excuse was different. Last year was Olympics year
and after that taxing match with Delpotro, he decided that he needed
more rest and so skipped Montreal. Keep in mind that he as well as
many top players do not play anything between Wimby and Canada.

This period of the year, for some of the top players is actually the longest break they have in the calendar, and probably the best rest, because there is no such disruption like the Christmas. At least it was before they cat the calendar and decided to end it earlier in November last year.
especially if one of them plays a final in DC like Rafa did many times.
I have seen complaints a few years ago on tennis.com forum of some fans stating "they were bored" the second week after SW, obviously they followed the top players only.
This year of the top 10, only Roger, Berdych, Gasquet and Wawrinka made appearances since Wimbledon and next week right before Canada, Tsonga returns in Washington, here he'll be the top seed.

That is 5 out of 10 playing between Wimby and Canada this year.
I think it is quite unusual.

Starting from 2015, it definitely will not be the case; There will
only be three weeks of gap between Wimbledon and Canada Masters.
This will be less than the year end vacation (which is 5 weeks for
everybody, 6 weeks if you don't play dc finals and 8 weeks if you
don't play WTF and DCF). Moreover this will also be less than the
5 week gap between AO and IW. Also, this is less than the 5 week
gap between IW and Madrid (which is the next mandatory ATP 1000).
So, this period will become the Fourth longest break in the year.

Not only from 2015, even now it is the fourth longest break
as this period has 4 weeks in it and other potential break
periods mentioned above has same or more weeks as of now.

Having said that I would agree that this is the period
when most top players would want to slack off as they
are already worn out by this time. The period between
AO and IW and IW and Madrid, players are enthusiastic to
play as they are not worn out yet.

Looks like Federer will be missing Montreal and Nadal will be
missing Cincinnati and so we have to wait until the quarterfinal
of the USO to see a Fedal Match again.:)

and I don't expect nadal to be a factor at all in montreal. he is still goofing off.

he should have been in montreal already.

andy is working hard on his game and his fitness in Miami or so I heard.

nadal is partying it up on yachts with his buddies like carlos moya and the others.

so you can see why I have andy as the favorite for the crown at flushing meadows. he may win in montreal too.

Nadal has a better chance in Montreal than in Cincinnatti due to
speed of court and his history over there.

Nobody goes to Montreal one full week ahead. People start
coming around middle of the week before the tournament.

I saw those yacht phots. Nadal was doing an impressive dive
from the top of the yacht into the sea.

affirmative. we will see how it goes.

I am getting ready to hit the sack.

post away and enjoy the forum. I will see you tomorrow.

speaking of nadal, I hear he even picked up a shoulder and an elbow injury in London. he was worn out from the long clay season. maybe he should have skipped Wimbledon.

that might explain why he is not playing and practicing much.

Roger will be #5 at the USO, that is a given after Hamburg

Which means he can be in No1e's quarter.

I read he doesn't play Cinci since they took some bottles from his bag at the airport several years ago. They didn't say what was in the bottles.

Well, obviously nothing sinister, eh? Or we'd have heard. ;)

Let's tone down the innuendo, it would be a start...

Commander Clay Death.. Here is an report of the Clay Warrior in training

Rafa update

a French Rafa's fan who was yesterday in Monacor watching Rafa practicing and she says that he looked to be in top form, working on his attack and volley. He did not have tape on his knee and did not show any signs of pain.

I'd say he's the favourite. No1e started practicing only 2 days ago, Fed's back is sore, Murray always loses early after big wins and I think Delpo may be injured too.

I doubt Fed will play Montreal. He hasn't confirmed yet but I'd imagine since Cincy is where he defends 1000 points he'll try and recover more for another week and give his back the most rest and therapy he can. I hope this is what he does anyway. Rafa's camp say he mightn't play Cincy so expect him to try hard here if that's the case.

I'd be cautious about saying what Murray "always does." He's on a new roll, and you, as a fan of Djokovic should be the first to respect that. That said, I would say that Murray has only to make a decent showing in Montreal and Cincy, and tune-up to defend the USO. Nole needs a bit of a confidence booster, as does Federer, so they'll be looking to do well. And Rafa needs to rack up enough points to pass Ferrer, which I think he can do, so he's #4 going into the USO.
