Well this will be the closest he'll get to an AO win; more power to him! Sorry I missed it! Will have to catch the repeat later! Funny, I didn't even see a listing for the match; later today maybe, but no live telecast here in Chicago! :nono

Wasn't a major surprise imo. See other recent home players beating the Fedster. Haas in Halle. Just a bit gutted I had no money down. Not the nicest feeling backing your player to lose but sometimes there's a stronger vibe they'll lose than win and hey, money is money. Pospisil did well at his home tournament too. Often happens. Didn't win, but did well.

You'll love it. Classic viewing  :s The old Chinese torture of bamboo sticks under the fingernails might actually be more enjoyable. Definitely goes for set 1 anyway.

It's not that I'm no longer a fan of Federer, but if he isn't going to take in consideration his aging body and possible mental slippage, I can't and won't feel sorry for him! Martina went through the same thing back in '94! If it wasn't for upsets galore at Wimbledon, it would have been a horrendous retirement with her going out early again and again! That last major final was a nice "going away" present; "thanks Lori McNeil!" {She took Graf out in the 1st round}

The shocking thing isn't decline but the level of it. His 2012 was great for a guy his age, hell it was a great year by any standards but truly I never expected him to go downhill so fast since then. Back problems or not last year I wouldn't have envisaged him playing that bad even approaching 36 years of age. Anyway, first week of the year and plenty of time and room for improvement hopefully.

This! I never imagined seeing Federer playing at this low of level until maybe age 35-36 which would figure to be his last year. 32 is old but I never expected him to be this awful.

The amount of shanks, shots hit wide and crap serves in set one was off the richter scale :/

You see that kind of thing all the time with the 2nd tier players! All of a sudden, things seem to click! They make a major semi or 2 and actually make the WTF, but you can't expect it to last! I'm surprised Roger's been able to hold on this long because I think overall players are so much better! Their main problem is finishing; mentally deficient or lack of training! Some aren't accustomed to winning and it takes it's toll over a time! I don't expect someone like Wawrinka to continue his streak; notwithstanding his efforts of late! :nono

Probably mentally burnt out to be honest. He's played a ridiculous amount of matches for a 32 year old.

That was Martina's problem at the end! Obviously it wasn't physical since she was able to return 6 whole years later; culiminating in several major doubles' wins! The last at '06 USO in MD with Bryan bro as she approached 50! Not sure Fed can do that, but he might want to concentrate on some doubles if he really wants to continue playing on the tour! Singles' streaks aren't in the cards for the old guy; I don't think! He sold his soul to the Devil in '12 to have his last with Wimbledon his crowining glory! :nono

There is a lot of disrespecting a great player in Lleyton Hewitt, who played a high quality match throughout the final. He rallied well, volleyed well and hit some key lobs. He was tenacious and executed. Roger WAS horrible in the first set, but the second set he was clutch and he fought hard in the third, but Hewitt worked hard and executed. He has played roger many times going back fifteen years; he is not intimidated by the Swiss' achievements or abilities. Lleyton comes to fight and was the better player today.

No disrespect meant at all but anyone who watched it would say that 1st set was the worst set Fed has ever played. Hewitt did what he had to do and in fairness played a nice clean match, with something like 3 UFEs to 21 or 22 from Fed first set. I mean, it's a case of one playing horrendous and the other solid but still so many points were just donated to him. Where he was particularly impressive was still managing to hold in the 2 games in the 3rd set with multiple deuces and when he served it out, but equally you could say Fed squandered tons of break points. Both are true. Naturally Hewitt was far better today and played well. I think Sara Errani would've troubled Fed today!

I would certainly admit that Hewitt played very well and held his ground. In fact,
after Fed came back and won the second set, I fully expected Fed to take it over from
there. But Lleyton held his ground fiercely, especially in the first two service games,
when he was break point down several times.

Again without any disrespect, this is indeed quite an upset considering

1. Hewitt is 6 months older than Fed.
2. Hewitt was 54 ranking spots below Fed at the time of the match.
3. Hewitt had five surgeries over the period of last four years, whereas Fed had none in life.
4. Hewitt had not won a title for the last three years.

But, Hewitt would not yield. That is why he is called a bulldog. If I remember right, he
took out JMDP in USO last year also. Nobody fights harder than Hewitt except Rafa.

I saw Fed's interview after the match. He says he is ready to attach AO etc.
He is doing empty talk and I don't believe a word of it.

Fact of the matter is that he is not able to hang in there in the rallies these days
and without that ability it is hard to win in modern tennis. His serve is still excellent,
but some days he leaves it in the locker room.

Here is Fed's post match interview.

He says there is no problem with the back anymore. He says grueling heat was not
an issue in his loss.

The first set was really something else...I can only think of a couple sets where Fed played that poorly. I thought he'd win with the momentum from the second set but once he got down a break in the third I figured that was it.

You must have missed those small clay court events this past year he was run out of prematurely by so called pros I've never heard of before or since! :nono

I believe you are probably correct. Burned out. Time to go off into the sunset.
