Chung beat Monfils in straights. He seems to be coming into his own a bit this clay season. I wonder if clay is his surface, or if it's just that he's growing into his game now.

It's only natural that there is less interest/activity when none of the big 5 are playing. I'm still following the scores a bit though, even though with Delpo and Haas out there is even less interest for me ...

It makes me laugh, though, to remember that until recently Queens and Halle were 250 tournaments. The imbalance between clay and grass is quite sad IMO, even though it has gotten at least a little better from last year.

I guess no one cares about all these extraneous 250 events! Haas gone due to countryman Struff in "straights!"

Agree 100% the fact that there are 3 clay masters 1000 tournaments and not a single one on grass is a travesty. Think how many more masters Federer would have.

Sasha gone too, making it four out four on seed exits. :clap

That was Misha who lost, but he was seeded too, the fact stays, 4 seeds were eliminated today.

They're dropping like flies; to "WC, qualifiers, & never-weres!" :nono  :dodgy: :cover

Listen, it is good to see some other faces than the usual suspects.

No seeds left in the top half. Sasha v RBA semi (assuming it happens) will probably decide the title?

I still remember him upsetting Nadal in the finals of a South American tourney during one of his comebacks! Rafa was ahead, it remained tight in TB's in the 2nd and 3rd sets, but Zeballos hung in there and won on the Bull's favorite surface! :puzzled :nono  :dodgy: :cover - - - http://fiero4251.blogspot.com/2016/08/fan-page-novak-nole-djokovic.html - - -

I would say that anything can happen. Sasha was not convincing on clay this season, and RBA was not far from losing his opener.

Chung is the darkhorse - would love to see him sneak in his first title, to join to the NextGeners with titles (if we start with players born in 1993): Thiem, Pouille, Kyrgios, Zverev, Khachanov, Coric. I could see several more added to this list in 2017.

I am not used to Mischa being seeded. :ras:

Thiem is really not next generation. He turns 24 this year, that starts to be ridiculous to still include him there.

As far as I can tell, there is no technical or official cut-off for "Next Gen." But there could be two general usages of the term. One is related to the new ATP Milan tournament, which is age 21 and under - but that is a moving target so technically Nick Kyrgios is no longer Next Gen (he turned 22 in April).

The other way is how I use the term - as a generation of players, a "cohort," if you will. In my Generation Theory, Thiem is technically part of the "Lost Generation," players born 1989-93. But I think we could also see him as a transitional player, who bridges the gap between the two generations. Just as he doesn't quite fit into the younger generation, which feels like it starts with Nick Kyrgios (so even Lucas Pouille, born in 1994, seems transitional), he also doesn't quite feel like he fits in with the Nishikori, Raonic, Dimitrov, Tomic group. At the very least he's "late Lost Gen." And of course all such generational ideas are artificial, if useful constructs.

Struff plays Sasha Z. tomorrow. I watched some of Struff v. Haas, and he has a very nice clay game. It'll be interesting to see if that will get him the upset, or if Zverev starts looking more comfortable on the clay.
