OK so in order to actually provide something constructive instead of just ranting about how bad this thread is, let me highlight just how insane the claim that Fognini and Djokovic's gameplans are similar.
Just for perspective, Fognini had never beaten Nadal before this year and had only managed to take a set off of him in their previous meetings. Of course, the fact that he beat Nadal this year could either mean "he has the gameplan down to a T," or that Nadal has been getting beaten by many people this year due to playing like garbage. I'm leaning towards the latter.
Fognini has always been a streaky, unpredictable, inconsistent player. He hits aggressively and plays low percentage tennis. If he gets hot, he gets hot. If he doesn't, it's unforced error galore. This often happens in the same match, or even in the same set. Check out his victory over Nadal in Rio earlier this year for evidence.
That high risk gameplan is absolutely nothing like the one Djokovic employs against Nadal. While Fognini can end points by hitting big, his rally shots aren't nearly as good as Djokovic, which is why he has to play even riskier than usual against Nadal. Meanwhile, Novak can actually construct points, pin Nadal behind his backhand, slowly open up the court, all the while playing within himself. Novak is also a much, much better mover than Fabio, so when Nadal gets the ascendency in the rallies, Novak can defend and turn them around without having to go for miracle shots, whereas Fabio has to go for some highly improbable shots from impossible positions which, to his credit, he sometimes pulls off.
Just because you hit your cross court backhand hard to Nadal's forehand doesn't mean you're employing the Djokovic gameplan. There's also the fact that Fognini is 5 ft 10, whereas Novak is 6 ft 2, which makes it infinitely easier for Novak to play within himself while handling Nadal's spin, but who's keeping track of facts, right?
Fabio's rally forehand isn't as heavy as Djokovic's either. The latter will use the spin to pin Nadal behind his backhand (ironic, isn't it?) and slowly open up the court. Fabio has to flatten out his forehand more and be more aggressive since he can't methodically use that pattern.
This is more ludicrous than Nishikori being a bad match-up for Nadal after the Madrid final. I just find it hilarious how between 2008-2013, there were literally two guys you'd call a bad match-up for Nadal (Novak and Davydenko, the latter being particularly impressive given his small stature), and one guy who was able to get the better of him on a semi consistent basis (Novak), and yet somehow, in the past 18 months, everyone from Nishikori to Wawrinka, to Fabio freaking Fognini are now "bad match-ups" for Nadal and have mastered the gameplan to beat him.
Either that or Nadal is just not playing well. I'll let you guys decide.
