That's what they were saying on the TV. He beat both guys who have a chance. He's won it - even if he loses to Richie.

Funny. In the on-court interview Novak said that all breaks happened at 3 -2 in every set. Hats off to the memory and the sets were true clones!

Ok. Novak has definitely won the group even if he loses 6-0 6-0 to Gasquet.

The match between RF and JMDP becomes a quarterfinal match now with
winner of that getting the second SF slot.

IF Djokovic wins Gasquet, he wins the group as he has 3 wins. If he loses
to Gasquets, Djokovic will have 2 wins and one of RF and JMDP will have 2 wins.
But, as Djokovic has won his matches against both of them, by virtue of
head to head, Djokovic will be the winner of group.

Thanks GS&M.

So, if Berdych beats Rafa, and Ferrer beats Stan, Berdych wins the group and Rafa is 2nd?

So far, this is what we can say with absolute certainty.

1. Novak has won Group B.

2. Nadal has clinched a SF slot.

3. Gasquet is eliminated.

4. Ferrer is eliminated.

5. Winner of RF vs. JMDP will clinch an SF slot.

I get so confused…I thought the tie was first broken by sets won/lost, not h2h. Sorry, I think someone (perhaps you) explained this already in another thread. I'm being lazy. Of course, it's theoretical, because Djokovic is going to beat Gasquet anyway.

1. If only two players are tied, they use h2h (not career, the h2h in the match in this wtf)

2. If more than two players are tied, they use percentage of sets won to break the tie.
After breaking a multiway tie, if at anytime, the mutiway tie reduces to a two way
tie, they use h2h again.

Now DP needs to regroup and give Fed a shellacking - 2 sets.

It does not matter whether 2 or 3 sets. Winner of this match gets
the second SF slot.

This page is updated after each match (at least the ones I've seen), so you'll always know the standings:

reposting tented's link... it doesn't explain things like game set and math, but the visual is extremely helpful.

Yes, it does matter. The fresher DP is the better. ;)

Thanks for the clarification, GSM. We should just archive these, since people like me seem to need the same explanations every year, over and over again…

That is right.

But, both the events seem to have less probability even individually at this time and for your scenario to occur both must happen.

I was rooting for your guy today, this is how you return the favor???

;)

Well... you left the door wide open for me to make some disparaging comment about Raonic. That I chose not to was a huge step for me. :)

Had to step away again, so I missed the end of the match, but congrats to Novak. Last I saw, JMDP had chances to break. Next thing I know Novak has match points. That he doesn't need to worry about the Gasquet match is even better. What a run he's on.

It will be interesting to see who gets through between JMDP and Federer. They could end up killing each other in a desperate attempt to make the semis. If that's the case, I don't see either of them beating Rafa (no, not even on an indoor hard-court).

In addition to your scneario, If Berdych beats Rafa in straight sets, Berdych becomes winner of group A independent of what happens in the other match (as Berdych will have more
percentage of sets won).

This is a good point. They are playing for the semis, and I don't see either closing the door in 2, on current form.

It is just best of 3, no excuses. Time for Roger to show he can still play worth a damn. Nole is the only one he can't beat here, anything else but the final is another awful result.

They can't kill each other beyond a point as this is not a five set match and there is
a tie-breaker even in the deciding set. The winner will be able to survive and beat Rafa.
