Finally, some convincing stuff from Serena. The forehand was much better than I have seen from her in the past few months and much better serving as well.

That first set, she played very tentative and safe tennis. Finally opened up in the second set.

I am just surprised that those losses in the French and Wimby has shook her confidence so much.

I am not really surprised. I mean I think she wanted to do well at the French, and to go down in the 2nd round when she was defending champ well I am sure it didn't sit well with her. Then to follow it up with an equally lackluster performance at Wimbledon where I am sure she and everyone else thought she was going to clean up after last year well, I can understand it. Those losses came very close to each other as well. I am hoping she uses those losses as motivation to get back to where she needs to be to win the US Open. She needs to watch more of that second set today to see what she needs to do to regain her footing.

I just don't see Angie beating Serena here. May be in Cincinnati... ;)
Serena in straights, one set being tight. Petko has much more firepower and look what happened to her...

Kerber may do better against Serena than Petko because she gets so many balls back. Serena can start getting irritated and making more UFEs. I predict Serena will win in any case.

I hope Serena is looking for a new coach. She needs to get rid of Patrick as soon as possible. He has out-lived his usefulness. It is nice to see Sasha in her corner.

OMG I cannot stand those two - My hate for them grows each time I see claiming to call a Serena match. Can't even enjoy Serena's match. I get very angry when I see them. They try to destroy Serena's character by claiming she's doing drugs....can't stand them.

Anything can happen. I don't call a match until the last ball has been struck.

Weird tournament for Serena. She didn't look convincing in the last three matches in a row.
Hopefully, this win boosts her confidence and she can play much better. Anyway, there is
time to peak for USO.

The two plates given to the winner and runner-up seemed to be identical in size and
shape. Have they started giving politically correct trophies?

Well I will say the one thing about this tournament for Serena was that it was not pretty, but I was pleased to see the fight back in her. That is what has agitated me the most about her losses this year the complete lack of fight and change of mindset.

Two Observations:

1. ESPN was careful and sent Mary Jo to interview Serena instead of Chris Evert or
Pam Shriver.

2. When asked a question about her team, Serena talked about her physio,
fitness trainer and hitting partner. But, somehow forgot to mention her
coach. Is it because the coach did not accompany her to this event or
is it because she is about to get rid of the coach?

It's a disgrace if they don't give one to every competitor for taking part then

Then that's not really calling anything.

I guess I was OK on this one....

Her serving was much better this tournament, but it could still be improved. Her ground game is still inconsistent especially on the forehand side, but she has a couple tournaments before the US Open to work out those kinks. She did well, and she won against great opponents. It certainly is a great start to her summer though and I look forward to her other tournaments to see where her play evolves from here.

Side note: I am glad to see Serena trying to make more endeavors to make it to net. That is where she should be. Serena is at her best when she is looking to play first strike tennis not rally the ball. I think for a while now aside from when Serena plays Sharapova everyone knows that Serena isn't necessarily looking to play first strike, so they go into a match knowing that they have a bit more time to play her. I mean even when Serena was winning practically everything I still felt she could have ended her points a lot sooner than she did in pretty much all of her matches.

And her first match vs Stosur in Canada this week was pretty convincing
