The Tournament:

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually over the last fortnight of January at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles; junior's championships; and wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events. Prior to 1988, it was played on grass courts, but since then three types of hardcourt surfaces have been used: green-coloured Rebound Ace up to 2007, blue Plexicushion from 2008 to 2019, and blue GreenSet since 2020.

First held in 1905 as the Australasian championships, the Australian Open has grown to become one of the biggest sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere. Nicknamed "the happy slam" and often referred to as the "Grand Slam of Asia/Pacific" the tournament is the highest attended Grand Slam event, with more than 812,000 people attending the 2020 tournament. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its three primary courts, Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena and the refurbished Margaret Court Arena equipped with retractable roofs.

About Melbourne:

Melbourne is the capital and most-populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Its name refers to an urban agglomeration of 9,993 km2 (3,858 sq mi), comprising a metropolitan area with 31 municipalities, and is also a common name for its city centre. The city occupies much of the coastline of Port Phillip bay and spreads into the Hinterland towards the Dandenong and Macedon ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley. It has a population of 5 million (19% of the population of Australia), and its inhabitants are commonly referred to as "Melburnians".

I'm thinking it could come down to Serena and Naomi.

Ranked #10, she will be somewhat at the mercy of the draw. But Ash Barty has barely played in a year, and Andreescu has been plagued with injuries, so same. What will make me sad is if she and Vika are drawn on the same side, as they could both go deep. Would be unfortunate if they met in a QF.

Don't forget Simona Halep she has come close to winning the AO....she is playing solid tennis at present

I'm not forgetting her, or other more in-form players in the top 10. I'm just saying that there are top 10 players that are NOT in-form. I have not even BEGUN to think through the draw. But I will be playing the draw challenge, and that is always useful for really parsing the options.

Just looking at Serena's draw and her half,
Serena could face Sabalenka in rd 16,Halep in q/finals,Osaka in s/final,if the seeds hold up in her half.

Looks like Mladenovic and Babos are both playing singles yet not defending their doubles title.
