Personally I've never bemoaned surface speeds because of Rafa. It would be more relevant as a complaint that it advantages Novak. But the truth is surfaces were slowed because of the power servers. We now live in a world where power servers can be countered with better racquet technology. In light of that it makes no sense to continue to slow surfaces. Let us fans see the full complement of surfaces we used to have. I tire of this dominance across surfaces from the top guys. The era of surface specialisation was more egalitarian to me. To be able to dominate across the surfaces meant more. I'm not certain that all of the top guys would have equal facility in that type of environment. It would have been great to test that thesis

Wait, better racket technology helps the return but not the serve? I don't disagree with the rest of the post but this seems odd.

So they say. Apparently the greater control enables returners to handle power significantly better than in previous times. I listened to a podcast all about this some years ago. Wish I could recall which one specifically

Similarly, my complaints on the slowing down of surfaces is that variation of surface speeds allows for fair competition. We would be able to see how players adapt to playing conditions that are very different.

The year is 2064623493393939

Roger Federer, who has been retired/dead for millenniums, maintains a cult following who continue to lament surface speeds.

And by the way, the slow courts here don't favor Nadal at all, and this will be evident against Thiem and God forbid, if he makes it to Novak.
Why not against Novak? You dont want Nadal in the Final?

I think even amateurs can sense that. If you go from a so-so racquet and/or string to a top one, yes, your serve gets better but the difference in control to handle powerful shots it is gigantically larger, so, from an amateur point of view at least this makes sense -- and I actually think this will be even more prominent at pro-level.

Why? Because it’s not so simple, simpleton! Ask Roger why he didn’t just serve ace on match point in the Wimbledon final, like he’s done countless times before...
That was a rhetorical complaint, you humorless pest. Quit stalking me.

That 3rd set tiebreaker in the Rafa/Kyrgios match was just a hot mess. If Rafa can’t clean up his forehand versus Team Theim it’s not going to be pretty.
