If Ana doesn't put more on her shots, she might be joining Venus in a depressing presser.

Ivanovic escapes, but she'd better start looking hungrier. She was lucky not to go 3.

Zakopalova's style of play is strange. A lot of shots with absolutely no pace at all and suddenly she whacks a nice hard inside out forehand out of nowhere. Half the time you're wondering why the hell Stosur isn't just thumping them back at her.

The Australian Open is a good way to completely screw up my sleep pattern.

She doesn't give you any rhythm. That's why she's had some big wins and troubles some top players.

Yeah but you're left scratching your head when she thumps balls out of nowhere herself. Why doesn't she do it more often? It's like she doesn't know what shes doing herself or she's completely schizo. That Steffi Graf style ball toss on her serve is WAY too high. Like Berdych's, can you imagine her playing in crazy windy conditions like the 2012 US Open? Gonna be DFs and 2nd serves all match.

You're right about that, and that toss! Stosur gets a break back.

Good job by Stosur. She suffers the local pressure, but it does help her on court. I hope she can make a good run.

Well well 3 topseeds out until now Errani, Vinci and most surprisingly Kvitova. She has a second opponent every time - herself, and that was really revealed in the third set. From the midle of the set she's a wreck UF errors piling up, tired look and a sort of apati - maybe I'm exaggerating but she was far from her top play. When that appears it's difficult to win against a player who sees her life's chance. Poor Kvitova - mental coach wanted asap.

How about Luksicka KumKhum

And what is it they say, to beat Serena bring

her to the net. Well Serena was 10/11 at the net

Serena was practicing her net game w/style points.

Serena said she had only liked to come to the net

to shake hands but.......... If she adds a net game

to her arsenal, good luck to her opponents.

And 20/20 first Serve points won.

Here is my summary of day 1
I kinda expected Sara to lose to Julia but *SHOCK* I never expected Petra to lose in the first round.
Both English Stars got kicked out.
Sabine matched Serena's score on day one, Li Na was better than both.

Yeah, thought Errani would lose too. That powder puff serve and weak groundstrokes might work on clay but not hardcourts to an aggressive opponent. Can't stand her anyway so I'm glad Goerges won that. Likewise surprised Kvitova lost to a nobody in the first round. Didn't expect anything much from her but certainly not a first round loss to a player I'd never heard of with a class surname.

Regarding Li being better than Lisicki and Serena, different opponents. You can't tell what the scoreline would have been if they'd played Li's opponent.

Exactly, scoreline differences mean nothing at this stage. Remember Sharapova last year, and we saw how that turned out in the semi's.

Also, Li's opponent has a hand injury and is having surgery after this match.

Nasty. Hand surgery doesn't sound good for a tennis player. Hope she recovers well.
