The Tournament:

The Australian Open is a tennis tournament held annually at Melbourne Park in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The tournament is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events held each year, preceding the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. The Australian Open starts in the middle of January and continues for two weeks coinciding with the Australia Day holiday. It features men's and women's singles; men's, women's, and mixed doubles; junior's championships; and wheelchair, legends, and exhibition events. Until 1987, it was played on grass courts, but since then two types of hardcourt surfaces have been used: green-coloured Rebound Ace up to 2007 and blue Plexicushion since 2008.

First held in 1905 as the Australasian championships, the Australian Open has grown to become one of the biggest sporting events in the Southern Hemisphere. Nicknamed "the happy slam", the Australian Open is the highest attended Grand Slam event, with more than 902,000 people attending the 2023 tournament. It was also the first Grand Slam tournament to feature indoor play during wet weather or extreme heat with its three primary courts, Rod Laver Arena, John Cain Arena and the refurbished Margaret Court Arena equipped with retractable roofs.

About Melbourne:

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Its name generally refers to a 9,993 km2 (3,858 sq mi) metropolitan area known as Greater Melbourne, comprising an urban agglomeration of 31 local municipalities, although the name is also used specifically for the local municipality of City of Melbourne based around its central business area. The metropolis occupies much of the northern and eastern coastlines of Port Phillip Bay and spreads into the Mornington Peninsula, part of West Gippsland, as well as the hinterlands towards the Yarra Valley, the Dandenong and Macedon Ranges. It has a population over 5 million (19% of the population of Australia, as per 2021 census), mostly residing to the east side of the city centre, and its inhabitants are commonly referred to as "Melburnians".

I'm not sure what's going on w/ her. She's kind of all over the place since RG. She does well at Wimby, but then drops her level for the Olympics and HC season. Does well at USO, but doesn't really do anything else in the fall. Now down under, she's lost early in 2 consecutive events.
Emma gets Iga in her projected QF at the AO, womens seeds have been completed

Aryna Sabalenka will be attempting to win a third consecutive womens singles title, something accomplished by Martina Hingis from 1997 to 1999., other former players to accomplish this were Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, and Monica Seles.

A realistic interview with Clara Tauson - promising in a way to me.

Clara has had a lot of injuries in her young career and she was a promising junior, I agree, working on fitness levels, strength training and being able to be healthy is a realistic goal for 2025.

Aryna Sabalenka starts defense of her title against Sloane Stephens, I cant see Sloane giving her much trouble :)

At this years Australian Open, coaches can choose to sit 'court-level with the players, in pods which display real-time statistics.
As with the changed rules, players can speak to coaches while on the same side of the court ( smh.com.au sport/tennis/c...)

Mirra Andreeva 63 63 over Bouzkova, 2nd set she had breaks, though at times over played her shots and lost her serve, in the end she was too strong overall, a good first round match for the 17 year old No 14 seed

Night match about to begin
Roof on RLA is now open
Sabalenka v Stephens
Saba I will not watch any more of this match if you keep 'breaking yourself' you were up 4-0? you are your 'own worst enemy at times'
Saba wins 63 62, I must say I liked Sloanes dress.
