Well we got the final we wanted Woznicacki v Williams

Wozniacki d Strycova 46 63 64.Williams d Davis 60 63

Venus Williams has beaten Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets in all five of their previous meetings?

Can Caroline get her first win against Venus in the final?

Going on both their semi final performances I am picking a Venus win.

Will be a tough match. Caro will get alot of balls back and could force Venus into a few errors, but Venus' serve has been great this week. I give her the edge because of that.

Venus has been great all week, won everything in straights. Caro on the other hand has been playing close matches and just played a grueling two and half hour 3 setter. I think fatigue will be issue here.
If Caro wins it, it'll be another tough 3 setter, but I doubt that.

Well Venus has had the slightly easier way Cepelova-Nara-Vesnina-Lauren Davis
Caro has had: Glushko - Taylor T - Georges - Strycova

My pick - of course - Caroline because her fighting spirit and good play. She had some amazing shots in the Strycova match - and a pity you can't see the whole match again because it was a good match.

Venus is going to have to come into the net a lot playing against Caroline, because Caroline can run all day and she's going to try to tired Venus out by running her all over the court.

On a bright Windy day, Venus serves first, falls behind 15-40 but saves both points, gets advantage on a Caro error and wins the first game on another Caro error. Caro serves and jumps ahead 40-0 but gives 2 points back before she takes the second game on a Venus error to even things out.
3rd game brings Caro ahead again 40-15, but this time she gives only one back, and scores on another Venus error, Caro gets the first break, ahead 2-1, she serves next.
Venus is coming to net quite often early.
Caro starts the 4th game just like last, ahead 40-0, she gives 2 points back but gets her 4the game with strong service game. Caro gets her first ace of match.
5th game is when Venus falls behind yet again 15-40, but this time Caro only needs one of the break chances before she gets the double break and 4-1 lead.
Two more holds of serve brings us to 5-2 and Caro will serve for hte first set. Caro scores her second ace with a comfortable hold and Venus gets her first game without having to face a break.
Caro gets her 3rd ace in the 8the game of the first set, takes the first set on strength of her serve 6-2, for the first set the ladies get 9 winners each but Venus commits 15UE's
Caro does not face a break point in the first set.

Second set starts with Venus getting ahead early only to be pushed to deuce and lose the first game, Caro gets another break. But this is the second set and Venus gets one too, it comes on a Caro double fault. With score tied 1-1, Venus finally gets a few good serves in, scores her first ace of the match and gets ahead 2-1 in the second. Back on serve, Caro goes next but it's now Wozniacki who has issues with her serve and is broken at 15. With tables turned, Venus gets a comfy hold to get ahead 4-1 and in control of the second set.
Wozniacki gets her first easy hold of the second set, and scores the 6th game of the set, score 2-4
Hold of serve and Venus serves for the second set ahead 5-3, Venus holds at love to even the match at one set a piece, second set goes to her 6-3

The deciding set brings an early break to Venus and she consolidates to get ahead 3-1 but Caro holds her serve and still behind a break she scores the 5th game of the set. Scoreboard shows 3-2 and Venus serves.
Venus hold her serve in the 6th game which is a strange one, I have never seen so many strange bounces and stray balls in a final. Caro hold her serve by out-lobbing Venus and a 3-4 score. Scoring the first 2 points of the game, Caro finds a samll opening only to see it close quickly when she can't score any more, 8th game of the deciding set goes to Venus for a 5-3 lead, Caro serves to stay in the match.
The 9th game of the 3rd set brings 4 match points for Venus, just too many to overcome for Caro, Venus takes the set and the match 2-6 6-3 6-3
Venus takes Auckland in 2015 after being the runner-up in 2014

Congrats to Venus and commies to Caroline. Venus will gain ranking points and hopefully will continue her move up in the ranking. While Caroline has made some needed improvements, power hitters can still expose the weaknesses in her game. At crucial times she can still get somewhat passive and begin to double-fault. It was great seeing two of my favorite players in the final.

I wonder what this says for Venus. It's a great win. Granted the draw, besides Caroline, was light. Perhaps she's past the worst of the illness and now can play with more consistency. Considering she's still ranked fairly high and had horrible results last year at every slam...If she can play a number of good weeks like this throughout the year and have better results at a few slams then I would not be at all surprised if she ends up in the top 10 by the end of the year.

Venus is easy to love and easy to be happy for.

Hey Kiu. That was one helluva post. Good summary. Next best thing than to actually watching it. Did you also see the Brisbane final with Sharapova and Ivanovic ?

Random observation:

Three of the last four times Caroline played Serena, she won the first set, only to lose in three. And now in this final against Venus, Caroline did the same thing.

In the end, I think it comes down to the serve. Serena's serve and Venus' for that matter is just that much better and that's the difference maker in a tight match. Go back and watch all the matches you mention, in the waning minutes of the final set, I guarantee both Serena and Venus came up w/ some clutch serves to either save BP or earn GP.

Good to read that two 34 year olds won this weekend - Venus in Auckland , NZ and Martina Hingis in the Brisbane doubles final with Sabine Lisicki.

Caroline seemed to run out of steam during the third set. Venus kept going for the angled corners from her position in the center of the court. Caro had no defense against that vintage shot form a resurgent Venus.

On a side note, that was a lovely speech Venus gave during the trophy presentation. She is an eloquent, thoughtful and funny speaker.

How could she have run out of steam, considering how super-fit she is? She can run a marathon, but have trouble finishing a three-set match?
