I'm a little surprised garbiñe is not in this field.

I am more surprised that Halep in not here or in Brisbane.

^There is a thing called "appearance fee", sometimes it can be HUGE!
Halep and Kvitova are in China, probably because Stacey got them a HUGE appearance fee.
I think Stacey did a great job spreading the talent around this first week of the season.

U-Rad took Franny out in straights. Elena Vesnina did the same to Mlad, she gets Konjuh next.

Coco took out Roberta Vinci in 3
Times are changing when Coco is seeded in an event and Roberta is not....

Yeah I agree. This is a lot more like an ATP week than a WTA week. A few years ago it used to be that half the top women played in the Hopman Cup and the other half in Brisbane with the other tournaments getting very little appearances by top 10-15 players. It's nice to see 2 or 3 girls playing in each. Auckland used to be the clear 2nd rate tournament.

Good start for Caroline - and look at the first serve % 61 first set Second set was a scare but Caroline won 76 so she's through to 3rd round. Taylor Townsend will be a major new American star far more serious than Sloane.

Caro vs. Julia always interests me, Caro won the last one, stopped Julia's streak at 3
H2H is 3-3

Elena vs. Venus should be good too, Elena leads that H2H 2-1
I am thinking Venus will even things up.

Isn't Vesnina the one who knocked Venus out really early at a grand slam a long while ago? I can't remember...

You are right, it was Wimby 2012, Elena also won the only encounter in 2013, though it was close... Venus won the last meeting last year.
As long as these two have been pros, I am surprised they only faced each other 3 times.

Caro got it done, it wasn't pretty but she won anyway. Julia mis-fired 50 times!

Venus/Vesnina next.

Venus was all business today. Dismisses Elena in straights w/ some legacy play.

Congrats to Caroline for her comfortable win over a difficult opponent Julia Goerges. No big problems for except after leading 31 in first set where she relaxed a bit. After 33 she again concentrated fully and won first set without further problems. They exchanged serve breaks in second set but again after 21 to Caroline after another break she completed second set in same manner as first. Head to head Caroline is now leading 4-3.

Well we got the final we wanted Woznicacki v Williams

Wozniacki d Strycova 46 63 64.Williams d Davis 60 63

Venus Williams has beaten Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets in all five of their previous meetings?

Can Caroline get her first win against Venus in the final?

Going on both their semi final performances I am picking a Venus win.
