is andy murray really the next king of our sport? I happen to think so. I believe he has nole on the run and wont stop until he catches up with him.

so if he is the next king of tennis then money will also start flowing in from all 4 corners of the globe.

some experts are saying that his endorsement portfolio might jump to about $74 million a year. I cant see that happening right away but it could if he snatches the u.s. open crown.

is he the new gold standard in tennis? what if he defends his open crown which I think he will.

how many of you believe that his time is coming and that he really is the future king?

RE: the great dunblane warrior is the hottest property in our sport

There are only three men's tennis players that made it into the
Forbes List this year. Roger about 70 million dollars and
both Nadal and Djokovic making about 28 to 30 million dollars.
These figures are approximate from the top of my head and you
can check Forbes for details.

Last year Murray made $12 million dollars. Even though his
stocks in UK would be up very much given the 77 year old
story that had been beaten to death, the rest of the world
do not care much about Murray. Also, IMHO, he does not
have a very good personality to be brand ambassador.

My guess would be that next year his earnings would
be somewhere between 24 and 36 million dollars. He is not
going to overshoot Nadal's or Djokovic's earnings that fast.

RE: the great dunblane warrior is the hottest property in our sport

Are you asking a tennis question or a brand name question?

The former is pretty obvious. Now that Federer is in the twilight of his career, the torch for the best player in the world on grass and fast hards is a bit of an open question. Rafa proved he was the best in 2010, Novak surpassed him in 2011 and now the last year or so, I think Murray has taken the mantle from Novak. It's not really hard to see why either. Murray has a more diverse range of talents that are more suited for those surfaces.

The latter question.. I don't know.

^ It' a Brand question. I'd expect Murray to have some performance bonuses built into his existing contracts + he has the UK market at his mercy for branding. It wouldn't surprise me if we found out soon that Andy had been using Gillette razors and brylcreem for years!

Biggest market is the States - and I think that's where Federer has separated himself from the rest in terms of endorsement income.

I think andy is the next biggest star in our sport. he has it all now.

he is well spoken and he is quite intelligent. he is unique in quite a few other ways as well.

some say he is the most honest and most down to earth chap on the tour.

this next slam should propel him to new heights. he will have surpassed nole as the best player in the sport should he snatch the u.s. open crown again.

especially if he is able to defeat nole again in the process.

how did he make this happen? he does not move as well as the great serbian slayer and his forehand is still a bit of a liability from my own vantage point.

you have the floor.

He is the man of the moment but he is still the no.2 player in the world. I think people are getting carried away with the sponsorship talk. Andy will continue to focus on this tennis. He won't be distracted by anything else.

BTW I would dispute that he doesn't move as well as Djokovic. When it comes to clay Novak is obviously better, on hard courts it is pretty close but Andy moves better on grass.

Andy's forehand has also improved.

“..the rest of the world do not care much about Murray”.

I’m sorry but who are you to speak for the rest of the world? Andy’s win was front-page news all over the world. Check the link out.

http://tennis.si.com/2013/07/08/photos-andy-murray-wimbledon-newspaper-front-pages/

BTW being shy and a little introverted does not mean you don’t have a ‘good personality’ as you put it. Nor does it mean you can’t be a global ambassador. The name Leo Messi springs to mind.

“My training blocks are really important and I won’t let anything get in the way of that – that just isn’t going to happen.” Andy Murray

I think it is safe to say that Andy will deal with the commercial side of his career only on his own terms. By all accounts he has driven his agents to distraction through his obsessive focus on the task at hand, refusing to sign up to anything that he is not comfortable with or that might compromise his training or disrupt his routine. Murray will always put his tennis first. Some brand experts see his determination to focus on his sport and largely eschew the trappings of sporting celebrity as commercially beneficial in the long-term.

Murray’s biggest current contract is a five-year clothing and footwear deal with Adidas, worth an estimated £15 million. The arrangement expires at the end of 2014 and negotiations have already started about a new contract, expected to double in value. His new deal is likely to make him a global brand ambassador.

Experts don’t expect Andy to capitalise on his maximum sponsorship potential and instead to be cautious about choosing his commercial partners. Andy Kenny, managing director at BrandRapport, said: "He doesn't strike me as the kind of person who will now look to have lots of commercial partners or commit himself to lots of PR activity – my instinct is that he will have a few sponsorships, but will do more with them."

Murray has become a British sporting icon and if he is knighted in the New Year Honours it will certainly do brand Murray no harm at all. Sponsors aren’t all interested in ‘pretty boys’. Some might see Andy’s commitment, visceral urge to succeed and his no-nonsense attitude as attributes to admire. Andy is a model of self-improvement and persistence. He has dedicated his life to his sport. He is not perfect but there is a lot to admire about Andy Murray. He will have the UK market at his feet. I don’t even need to talk about global brands.

The Wimbledon win has triggered the performance bonuses. No chance Andy will do a Gillette ad. Being clean shaven is not something he really cares about and I would assume a deal with Gillette would require him to be clean shaven during matches etc.

Brylcreem. :puzzled Do any guys use that now? No chance of Andy promoting ANY hair products.

its the next slam crown that will really propel him.

We have a Prime Minister not a President. I've heard PM Cameron called a lot of things but never one of the world's greatest personalities. Not sure I'd put any of the others in that category either. Some famous Scots though.

BTW I hate to disappoint you but Andy was born in Glasgow which isn't in the Scottish Highlands but that's OK. :) You do make me laugh.

The brylcreem comment was hilarious! But good for you, Iona, telling them all off. I don't think Andy is just about to sell off his brand, and it's rather a crass approach to his Wimbledon win, but there was much talk, even before he won it, as to what it would be worth. Whether it be endorsements, appearance fees, future commentating, etc., it does seem fair to say that his stock did just go way up.

General Clay Death: given Iona's iconic status here as the sole bearer of the Murray flame, I would suggest she deserves a title, not merely a commission. Taking the "M" from Murray, may I suggest Marchioness?

Anybody winning a Grand Slam is indeed news and will be published
in newspapers. With the "Perry Ghost Story", it might even push it
from page 11 to page 1. I have no problem with it.

What I was suggesting was that the amount mentioned by
the OP as the potential earning of Murray for next year is
outrageous and it is not going to happen, at least not certainly
that fast.

Here is another article from tennis.com that also supports
my view point. In particular, this article cites a wall street article
and "Wall Street" folks probably know a thing or two about
endorsements and how they work.

that was being claimed in some article that I read. I also doubt that he will hit $74 mill soon. it may happen eventually if he bags the next 2 slams and then defends his wimby crown again.

if he does these things and he is the best player in the game then his stock will absolutely skyrocket.

There is no ‘might’ about it. It was front-page news in the international press. In the UK Andy was not just front and back page news. He was cover to cover news. Just like he was when he won his first slam.

The article posted by Matt Cronin on tennis.com is just 3 quotes from experts telling us nothing that we as non-experts don’t know already. Newspapers and marketing experts are plucking numbers out of the sky. They’re guessing because they have no real clue. Is Andy more marketable now than he was 2 weeks ago? Yes. Do I think Andy’s endorsement portfolio could jump to $74 million a year? The simple answer is no. Andy is in a unique position with regard to the UK market but his focus will remain tennis. He will limit his sponsors if necessary.

The blog from the WSJ is interesting but again it didn’t really tell me anything I didn’t know. I’m sure most posters reading it would feel the same.

“… the rest of the world do not care much about Murray. Also, IMHO, he does not have a very good personality to be brand ambassador.”

I’m sorry but that is nonsense. It was nonsense before he won a slam and it is nonsense now.

Glad you like it, Marquesa Iona! I think we're arguing two different things here. Some are asking how much you can actually calculate that Wimbledon win, in monetary terms, for Murray right now. (I don't believe you yet can.) I think you, Iona, are worried that talk of it's overall monetary value means that Andy will go for the quick cash-in, which I also don't think is so. The notion that the Wimbledon win made him more valuable over time, however, I do believe is right. But that anyone can put a pound sterling amount on it now I think is ludicrous.

" Is Andy more marketable now than he was 2 weeks ago? Yes. Do I think Andy’s endorsement portfolio could jump to $74 million a year? The simple answer is no"

This is exactly what I said also. Glad you finally agree.

"Andy is in a unique position with regard to the UK market."

This is exactly what was meant by "the rest of the world" remark.
This thread is about his marketability and earning potential.
Why didn't you say that he is in a unique position with respect to
the international market. I suppose, it is because you agree with
the intent behind my remark even though you perceived a
non-existent slight of your guy by me.
