It looked very close at start of match, both dropped serve and further break points against Novak and he looked negative. But he hung on in there. In second set he looked much more confident, forehand improved noticeably and 80%+ on first serve. This tournament has been good for him despite weather. Great support for him from crowd.
Thanks for the reports from the front, @Mary !

Good title for Novak. He played better tennis than rest of the year here. Some improvements really could be seen finally in the final. A title win can just make you feel good. This is good for him.

Good win for him but at the same time it's telling that he had to enter a cream puff tourney the week before Wimbledon. That tells us where his game/confidence is at

I actually think Novak made a great decision in playing Eastbourne. No matter how small, a title always gives a player confidence. If he had entered Halle or London, he might have been upset in the first or second round. In that case, not only he would not have gotten much needed practice on grass, but also his confidence would have been shaken further. I actually admire him for accepting the reality and playing in Eastbourne instead of simply servicing vain ego. The first step to improvement is to accept the current reality.

I agree, it can only be good for him going forward but it just shows where his game and confidence is at. There's no way he plays this tourney if he was anywhere near his normal self.

He'd have to be a mental midget not to understand where he is after being unable to defend anything except a minor event in Qatar this season! I'm still shaking my head on the fall; only taking Canada since completing Nole-Slam! He's made plenty of finals, but hasn't really looked like winning since last spring! I saw a significant drop even before the FO, winning Madrid over Murray taking a last minute invite from Tiriac! We have to keep believing he'll find the right system to get his game somewhere near what it was a year ago! :yesyes:
