The Tournament:

After two years in Nottingham, the ATP World Tour event returns to Eastbourne. The Eastbourne International is a tennis tournament on the Women's Tennis Association Tour and the ATP World Tour held at the Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club, Eastbourne, United Kingdom.

Held since 1974, it is classified as a WTA Premier tournament on the WTA Tour. Also, it was an ATP World Tour 250 series on the ATP World Tour from 2009 to 2014. The tournament is played on outdoor grass courts, and is generally considered a "warm-up" for the Wimbledon Grand Slam event, which begins the following week.

About Eastbourne:

Eastbourne is a large town, seaside resort, and borough in the non-metropolitan county of East Sussex on the south coast of England, 19 miles (31 km) east of Brighton. Eastbourne is immediately to the east of Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain.

With a seafront consisting largely of Victorian hotels, a pier, and a Napoleonic era fort and military museum, Eastbourne was developed by the Duke of Devonshire from 1859 from four separate hamlets. It has a growing population, a broad economic base, and is home to companies in a wide range of industries.

Djokovic has taken the WC into his first tune-up pre-Wimbledon since 2010. Does anyone else think that Mischa Zverev might be over-playing to be here before Wimbledon?

Antalya is the other one, (debut year.) Eastbourne got the tournament back over Nottingham, I believe. WTA still plays there, (Vekic won this year.) Nottingham has been downgraded to a Challenger on the ATP calendar.

Djokovic kicks off his grass tune-up tomorrow v. qualifier Pospisil. Donald Young faces young Jared Donaldson. (Couldn't resist that.) And Gasquet gets my buddy Frances Tiafoe. Go Frances!

Weather at Eastbourne and NW of London where I am is awful, wet, dark, cold and forecast for week grim. Amazed there is play at Wimbledon. So sorry for Eastbourne crowd still sat in rain. It's such a popular tournament.

With all the rain today, I suspect tomorrow's OOP doesn't look that different from today's, but here it is, anyway:

Novak returning well and looking relaxed. Stand up applause from Eastbourne crowd. Some great tennis from both in this match. Thank goodness rain held off for a few hours.

Novak is still his 2017 self, just not bad enough to lose to a doubles specialist. Today, at least.
What I did notice, is that his game has become quite impotent. If Pospisil didn't have the movement and anticipation of a concrete block, he would have made a match out of this.
If it weren't for all those botched net approaches and Vasek's horrible returning, Djokovic would not have hit a single winner.
I know he isn't the type to hit the cover off the ball, but this performance was Ferrer like, on days that Ferrer would feel especially defensive.
With this game, I can see him bombing out to the first decent grass courter he faces, in both Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Didn't look like that to me and I head a great view!

Djokovic was careful and defensive but hit some good shots here and there. At least he won. So, that's good obviously for him. Let's see if he will be more aggressive going forward.
