Not enough that they have double duties, so far 3 matches went to 3 sets as well.

EDIT: Make them 4.

Isn't that how it usually goes? Survival of the fittest. The champ is awarded a Madrid 1st round loss. :dodgy:

Hmm, I did not see this coming.
Thiem loses to Gerald Melzer in 3 sets.
G. Melzer is ranked 186

I would like to see johnsteibeck's opinion about this

From 0-3 15-40 down Murray wins the first set 6-4. Looking pretty happy out there as far as Murray on clay goes.

Hopefully just a set away from a clay final for the first time in his career. Nice box to tick if he does it.

Melzer has clay chops, remember he even beat Novak on Clay.

No, that was his big brother, Jurgen. Gerald hasn't played Nole.

Murray's first clay final. Sounds weird but there it is. I mean, clay might be your worst surface but a good player like Andy should have found ways way before today. Better late than never I guess.

It's understandable though as he's not good enough on the surface to make Masters finals given the quality and consistency of the other guys out there. He could easily have entered minor clay tournaments at any point (i think he's played a couple of Barcelona's before but not many others) and done what he's done this week but there's no sense in doing it unless there's a good reason for it and it just happens this week that there is a new coaching partnership to work on.

@GSM: I hadn't really, either, but herios mentioned above that he was ranked 186, which seemed low, so I looked him up. I had heard of the brother, but haven't seen him play. He's much younger.

Not to defend Murray, but plenty of top players have holes in their resumes! IIRC Becker the biggest star I can think of without a clay title; playing a couple finals like MC and ROME and lost eventually! It happens! McEnroe and Connors were lucky enough to come along with the advent of Har-Tru and took a title here and there on that slippery surface here in the States! McEnroe got to a couple semi's and FO final, but he was nowhere near the talent of Federer who got to final after final before taking his lone title! Connors never got to a final, actually losing to Vitas Gerulaitus in an '80 semi.! That was his personal "pigeon" and he still let it get away from him! You also need luck as well as skill to win on red clay in Europe! :nono :cover

So Murray played two singles matches and a doubles match today. At least he lost the doubles match so he doesn't have to play two matches again tomorrow.

Tough day for Murray but I was glad to see him fight it out with Rosol after dropping the first set despite leading it 4-1. Nice to see him take charge after that. Also relieved that he got through RBA in two sets and lost in the doubles. I was hoping for maybe a double title in Munich but after the rain delay I was hoping the doubles wouldn't ruin his chances for a singles title at last on clay.
So now he's going up against Kohlsomethingoranother. Kohl is no slouch either winning the Munich title twice and another runner up finish. Murray played him in IW I think and won in three sets.

Go Muzza! :clap
