Even then, Edberg and Becker were still very good during their age 28 seasons. Edberg won 3 titles, had 60 match wins, and finished the year ranked #7 in 1994. Becker won 5 titles (including the Australian Open), had a 42-14 record, and finished the year ranked #6 in 1996. Their drop off didn't happen until very late in their 20s/early 30s.
Yes, especially Becker. What I call "Early/Slow Decline" can still be quite good, but isn't quite as good as their very best years - it is "post-peak, but still prime."

Edberg dropped a notch in 1993. In truth, his best year was probably '91 (age 25) and there was a slow arc of decline after), with a clear step down in 93-94 (27-28), then another in 95-96 (29-30). He retired at 30.

Becker was elite through 96 when he was 28 for most of the year, turning 29 at the very end. He was probably at his peak in 89-90, though, when he was 21-22. Becker's last match was in 1999, when he was 31.

By the skin of his teeth, Cerundolo is still in it. More mature and calm in the TB. Onto the 3rd we go.

Good match, solid win for Cerundolo, but good showing by young Mensik. Mensik might have been reading our forums because he's fixed that awful hair cut by growing the sides in.

Two of the three former Masters winners are out today - only Draper left.

Kind of hoping for Musetti or Ruud. The latter is overdue, while the former seems to taking it up a notch.

Jack Draper will be hard to beat, he just white washed my young Italian Arnaldi 60 64
Draper to now rise to No 5 in the rankings with this win surpassing Djokovic
Top 3 in the ATP Race

You would think one of them would change in the locker room and wear another kit?, quite frankly it is about time wearing identical outfits right down to wearing identical caps is not allowed? about time Mensik grew that awful 'mo hawk' hair cut., out.
It was a headache to watch!
My Dark Horse Cerundolo is into his first Masters SF, !

Fun Fact!
Only 2 left handers have reached the ATP Top 5 this century,
Nadal, who entered it in May 2005
Draper, who will enter it in May of 2025.

One out of four. We are rooting for the exact same players (look at us on the same side!). But be warned, 25% of positive results is already way above my recent average...
Well, we're 50% today, so far. :)

Pleasing factor that Italy now has 2 Top Ten players, Sinner and now Musetti, Lorenzo always had the game it was just his head that got in the way from winning matches he should have, hopefully with these good results in Madrid he can stay in the Top Ten

ATP 1000 Madrid,
SFs, Friday May 2,
Not before 4pm local time,

Rudd (14) vs Cerundolo (20) Cerundolo leads their H2H 5-3

Not before 8pm,

Well I have my dark horse Fransico in the SF and my Italian Musetti , I wonder if we will see them battle it out in the final :)

Francisco Cerundolo My Dark Horse in Madrid, ( for all you disbelievers out there! )
Will hit a new career high on Monday
No 18 guaranteed
No 16 if he reaches the final
No 13 if he wins the final
BTW,
Francisco has won 24 ATP Tour matches this year
Nobody has won more in 2025!

Not great news for Felix who was the top seed at the Estoril challenger tournament,
Felix was defeated 75 64 by Q Andreo Pelligrino to reach the QFs ( btw Pelligrini is a very handsome man )
Felix will drop to #27 in the rankings

Yeah, Italy has really come along of late. Sinner is obviously quite easily the best Italian player of the Open Era, followed by Adriano Panatta. After that it is probably Matteo Berrettini, but Musetii has a chance of eventually at least making it to #3. Anyhow, by my estimation, here are the top 10 Italian players of the Open Era:

  1. Jannik Sinner: 3 GS, 1 TF, 4 Masters, 19 titles, #1
  2. Adriano Panatta: 1 GS, 1 Masters, 11 titles, #4
  3. Matteo Berrettini: 10 titles, #6
  4. Fabio Fognini: 1 Masters, 9 titles, #9
  5. Corrado Barrazutti: 5 titles, #7
  6. Paolo Bertolucci: 6 titles, #12
  7. Lorenzo Musetti: 2 titles, #10
  8. Lorenzo Sonego: 4 titles, #21
  9. Tie (all roughly equal): Andrea Gaudenzi, Andreas Seppi, Marco Cecchinato - all 3 titles, best rank #16-18
Musetti will jump over the "two Bs" if he wins Madrid. If not, he'll still probably get there eventually. I think he's got a good chance of passing Fognini and Berrettini. To pass Panatta, he'll either have to win a Slam or several Masters (I sort of see 3 Masters are being roughly equal to 1 GS, in terms of career greatness).
